Worth Applying to Brown?

Hi everyone! I’m currently a junior in high school, I just wanted to know if I really had any chance of getting into this school with my current situation, or if it would be extremely slim.
ACT: 33 (I know it’s not idyllic)
GPA: 4.3 (unweighted 4.0)
APs: Chem, Calc, US History, Gov, Language and Composition, Literature, Studio Art
Extra curriculars: Varsity Track and Cross Country (captain), Environmental Club President, Debate Club, Youth Group
Community Service: 160 + hours

This truly is my dream school, I know they look for independent thinkers which I will make clear in my essays, but if for some reason I don’t seem qualified let me know! Thanks!

Apply, simple as that. You’re qualified. You don’t want to not apply then regret it, always wondering what if.

Nothing stands out that wouldn’t make you a candidate for Brown. It’s a slim chance for all applicants.

I would suggest you not think of Brown as your “dream school” as your odds of getting in are low, unless you’re a URM which you didn’t indicate. Why are you so high on Brown? What are other schools are you considering?

A 33 is slighly low and your ECs look a bit blah. Do you have any hooks?

At the end of the day - remember it’s a crap-shoot:

Just apply and hope for the best.

This is a little harsh. I do not think the majority of Brown students have ECs more interesting/extensive than that.

I agree with jabrown2013 and bruno14.

It’s either harsh or realistic depending on your viewpoint.

With this profile, I suggest the OP develop a realistic list rather than fixating about a school where the admist odds are in the teens at best for an applicant with that profile.

Odds in the teens (probably a correct estimate for this applicant) aren’t really all that “low” for a school whose overall admission rate is 9%. The OP asked if it was “worth” it to apply to Brown, not whether s/he can expect to be accepted. Getting into a school like Brown is a long shot for nearly everyone–something important to keep in mind–but that doesn’t mean that qualified applicants like the OP should be discouraged from applying! It’s a little audacious to tell someone like this not to think of Brown (or any school) as their dream school.

Okay - my best advise to the OP is scroll through the 2017 RD thread (or similar) and compare their profile. I stand by my assessment.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/brown-university/1481001-official-brown-university-2017-rd-results.html

Yes, it’s worth applying. On the other hand, pinning your hopes and ego on the decision of a group of strangers (the admissions committee) is not a wise choice: recognize that not every qualified candidate can be admitted and cast a wide net, including schools with acceptance rates up to 35% plus a safety school or two you would enjoy attending. If you use this balanced approach, you will end up somewhere well suited to your needs, be it at Brown or elsewhere.

Honestly, you should apply! Many people on cc can tell you this and that but at the end of the day, you will write your essay and your passion and creativity will shine through. Brown is amazing place, but it should not be considered “impossible” or “insanely difficult” to get in. You definitely have a chance!

Just try your best on the essay and show why you are a good fit for the school, how the open curriculum will enhance your education and what you will get out of it, and lastly how you would contribute to your class. To sum up, show how you are unique and just be yourself!

I’ve definitely met people at Brown with lower stats and ec’s that are not impressive–trust me!
