Worth Applying???

I'm not sure if nationality plays as a factor in WM admissions but I'm Armenian. My high school gpa was a little under a 3.0. I'd like to transfer Spring '08 as a sophomore and study international relations. Right now I have a 3.51 college gpa. Yesterday I had finished my applications to George Washington U and American U and I'm not sure if its worth applying to William and Mary. Anyone have any advice? I appreciate it.

Well, your high school GPA certainly isn't helping things, but given that you've completed a year of college, they'll be more interested in your college grades. You're at a 3.51, and the admissions committee has set 3.6 as a target for transfer students. It's not a cutoff, mind you, and they do take into account other factors as well, so with your college performance you might have a shot. If you apply, I would certainly be upfront the low H.S. GPA and point out your significant improvements since then. Also, like any other student applying, you have to convince them why they should pick you, apart from your GPA and test scores. Best of luck.

I guess you just have to ask yourself if trying is worth it to you - both in cost and in effort.

No one can answer that question for you.

Thanks guys...I appreciate it. Anyone else? Any advise about the admissions process dos and don'ts is also helpful.

I don't really know anything about transfer admissions, but if it's like freshman admissions, I would say the essay (and especially the optional essay) can really help. I think it's good to show a quirkier side of your personality in the optional essay/submission.

This is the most interesting thread here. Like you, my high school GPA is a little below a 3.0, and I'm applying for the fall of 08. I'm also applying to American and George Washington! My college GPA thus far is a 3.71 (which I'm hoping to bring up). I'm Middle-Eastern, but I doubt that'll help much.

I however have very good reasons to point out my improvements between high school and college. That said, my GPA should go up this semester, and the following since I'm starting to take classes that I have an actual interest in.

What do you guys think? Should I apply to William and Mary? William and Mary, GWU, and Johns Hopkins there's nowhere else I really have an interest in.

But it's nice to see that someone else is in almost the exact same boat as me.

Your high school GPA is way too low for consideration, even as a transfer to William and Mary in my opinion. Your race should not matter at all. Depends too on the college where your transcripts are coming from. William and Mary is not easy. Your SAT scores will help determine your potential to do well.

Kind of responding to an old post, but I'm really going to have to disagree about the importance of high school GPA for a transfer.

However, I'm not sure what Financial Aid is like for international students at W&M (if that is something that is important to you), but I know that Marymount is very generous in that regard. They also have an honors program, if you are looking for something more challenging.

(The OP probably isn't checking this thread any more, but it could be useful for someone lurking later...)
