Worth it?{Recieved my Acceptance today}

I feel kind of sick right now, with my mother's reaction to the huge PLUS loan. I understand that its a lot to ask her to sign into, and I'm not sure I will be able to. $111,000 for a four-year undergraduate degree at stern is such a hefty price. Perhaps I knew this would be too good to be true, what did I expect? Oh how I hate that I wasn't born a Hilton or a Gates. I'm not 100% sure as of yet but I most likely won't be attending NYU in the fall. I'm glad a met a whole mess of you though, maybe we'll cross paths in Manhattan some day. I won't give up on my dream completely though, theres always graduate school. I'm thankful that I was accepted though.

Any thoughts as to whether or not attending stern will be worth it? Are there any NYU @ Stern alumni that have been in my situation? Any imput at all will be greatly appreciated.

I will be attending the University Day, maybe I can recieve some guidance there. I feel lost (though, I'm probably thinking pretty clearly at the moment), but I dont want to talk about this on the phone.

Please don't use this thread against me, I'm just trying to vent my feelings at the moment since nobody is home.

I know the feelings buddy. It sucks being qualified, but being unable to afford to go.

Unfortunately, I think most of us will be in your situation. Id love to go, but if I dont get any aid(dont expect to), then I will probably be out of luck as well.

Ah, I know what you mean. That PLUS loan is absolutely insane.

But, unfortunately, I can't say it's much of a surprise since I've heard horror stories about NYU's financial aid packages.

I wish I could win the lotto tomorrow or something, lol.

"I feel lost (though, I'm probably thinking pretty clearly at the moment), but I dont want to talk about this on the phone."

Hmmm

Is that confusing? Im not the best at explaining how I feel.

Yeah I am in the same situation as well. We are in a little different of a situation because I am film at Tisch. Personally, I just realized that Tisch is one of the best programs in the country with a high placement rating, so hopefully I can get a good enough job afterward to start putting a dent in some of those loans. I know Stern has one of the most prestigious programs in the country as well, so the chance that you will leave with a fairly well-paying job is pretty high. It is somewhat of a risk though. I know I am going to be in debt for a while but I think it is worth it at least for me because I have wanted this for so long and there is no where else I want to go this much. You just have to see if you are willing to take the risk because there is no way of judging what will happen when your four years are over. Good luck!

you got a letter today?
where are you located?!

What's your EFC? How much money in grants and scholarships did you get?

I hope I don't end up in the same situation, but I'm hoping my EFC is low enough to get me some decent aid (like, better than yours...).

Same to my son! Stafford Load 2,625. Plus Loan 33,045.

Well my mom makes about $26k in income, and gets about 6k in child support.
Other assets include about $800 in total in savings, and nothing else. This may be a lot of information to indulge you all in but I don't see the harm.

Totals:
pell grant=$1300
NY TAP Grant=$3800
Work-Study=$4000
Perkins Loan=$2400
Stafford Loan=$2625

PLUS Loan=$22,725

Total $36,850
Note that this is the exact estimated cost of tution and expenses as a commuting student. NYU isn't really bad with financial aid (I've heard of a of merit scholarship that a friend of a friend recieved), I think my stats were very average and that was probably my problem.

That's terrible financial aid right there. I hate it when schools claim they meet full aid by giving people loans. Thats going to be tough to pay with your mom's salary.

That's horrible, and I'm so sorry for you. I got awards from some of the UCs that offered 20-25k in PLUS loans, and I decided I couldn't attend because of that.

PLUS loans can be borrowed by anybody with good enough credit...I dunno why NYU decides to call that "financial aid." It's not like they are giving you anything you couldn't already get for yourself!

Wow. Did your mother file her FAFSA late or something?

tough? impossible, we're barely making by without having to pay $400~ more a year for a PLUS loan. i dont think NYU ever claimed to meet full aid, but i'm extremely greatful for them trying though (options of loans is better than no options of loans at all).

omgitsjack: no we (i filled, she doesn't know how to do it LOL) filed mid to late jan.
sorry my post appears before yours

Stephen the problem with a lot of these loans is you could get the same interest rate at many banks. They are not that great of deals(unless they are federally subsidized).

Ryan, I'm trying not to be bitter towards NYU haha lets leave it at that.

do the bump (thats a dance right?), an update on my situation i will definately have a talk with the financial aid office on or around april 9th. i want to understand the PLUS loan more, and inquire about the importance of my mom's credit record

does anyone know what kind of companies stern has internships for? and like the average income of students after undergraduate studies?
