As the title states, is it worth it to choose to go to a school that put you in Undeclared rather than your major of choice?

My situation is that I have been accepted for engineering at Clemson and UMass, but to General Studies at U of Illinois and UMD College Park. I like all of the schools, but would it be smart to only consider schools that admitted me to engineering, or no? Because I do like UMD and UIUC a lot, just as much as Clemson and UMass.

Will I most likely have to add on another year of attendance if I go to a school where I start in General Studies? Doesn't everyone (all majors) take basically the same classes freshman year anyways?

If you want to be an engineer, I’d go to a school where you are in the engineering program. Engineering is a difficult major to switch into if you are not in it from the start.

If you want to do engineering, but are not in the engineering division, you have to apply to switch into the major, while choosing freshman year courses that students in the desired engineering major take (e.g. math, physics). Whether switching is difficult depends on the school.

Typically engineers start off with some specialized classes for engineers right from freshman year. You will be behind if you don’t take these classes.

Also some (not all) schools don’t allow transfers between programs, or set super high standards for transfers from one program to another (especially because this case the engineering programs seem to have higher admissions standards than other parts of the university). If you truly want to be an engineer, I’d be very careful about going to a school if you are not accepted into its engineering program. Personally, I’d go to a school where you are into the engineering program.
