Worth it to retake SATs?

Hello, I'm a rising freshman at a large state flagship (ranked in the 80s/90s), who's looking to transfer after my freshman year. I was accepted to schools that were more selective and academically stronger, but I had to decline the admissions offers since I didn't get enough aid.

I'd still like a second shot at applying to some schools. Would it be worth retaking my SATs? I have a 2080 (680M, 700 CR, 710 W). Surprisingly, this got me into UMich and NYU; however, I'm interested in transferring into schools such as Cornell, Penn, Rice, and UVa- would retaking the SATs for a 2250+ be useful? My HS GPA was solid, 3.8/4.0 UW, but I'm looking to do better in college.

As long as your SAT Subject Test, AP Test scores and college grades are good, you will be fine with those SAT scores.

Perazziman: I scored a 700 and 730 on my physics and math II subject tests. My APs are 4s and 5s, and I’m hoping that I’ll get As in my Math (Multivar Calc and Linear Algebra) courses during school. I’m really worried about the math score; a 670 is below the 25th percentile for many school. I’m assuming strong math grades in college can compensate for this.

Most schools don’t require test scores for transfer after freshman year. If they do, they would want the scores of the test taken before college.

Many selective colleges require test scores for soph transfers, less so for jr transfers. All of the colleges listed by the OP require test scores of all transfer applicants (Cornell only does if they any were taken in HS). Some schools accept post-HS testing, some don’t.

Even more than fr admissions, there are many factors that are considered for transfers, so there is no way anyone can tell you how much a single SAT score is going to affect you.

entomom: Do you know if the post HS testing thing is only applicable to applicants who did not take tests during HS? Also, where’d you find the info for Cornell? I’ve scoured their website, and couldn’t find anything.

Apply > Transfer Applicants > Admission Requirements > #8

[Admission Requirements | Admissions](Transfer Applicants | Undergraduate Admissions)

I’m not sure about post-HS testing, but in rereading the passage, it doesn’t say if you took them ‘in HS’, but rather ‘previously’. It would be best to contact the Admissions office and ask them directly.

Thanks, I’ll check with the school(s).

I have heard it said that if you have done well on Calc, MV Calc and Linear Algebra adcoms will really not care that much about how you did on SAT Math that measures your HS Algebra skills. I would focus on the rest of the app.

@perazziman: For what it’s worth, I got an A calc in HS and 4 on the BC exam…
