worth it?

so NYU has been my dream school for quite a while.... I get shivers just imagining myself there, and have saved every bit of mail I've ever gotten from them.... and I visited over the summer and fell even more in love. I visited Columbia and fell in love with their campus too, but 1. I doubt I'll get in, and 2. I'll probably still be secretly jealous of the NYU kids if i end up at Columbia.

But the biggest problem I have is NYU's ginormous cost. My parents make a combined $200k or so, but still have 2 other kids to put through college.... plus we live in CA so the cost of living is very high. My dad's willing to take out loans if I get into Columbia, but doesn't think NYU is worth it.

Now I'm not going there for Tisch or Stern or anything..... I'm applying to CAS as an Undecided/English major. I've been kinda considering law school but I'm still mostly unsure about what I wanna do after 4 years of college.

So is drowning in debt worth it, or can I expect any help from NYU fin aid? Or should I stick to a UC or cross my fingers for Columbia? I honestly can't really see myself happy anywhere else.

Well, if you are going to be an English major, then I guess you might have to worry a little about getting a high paying job. I would consider maybe going to a UC school in your case, and you should explain to your father that NYU is better than Columbia for undergraduate studies in a variety of circumstances, such as there undergraduate business program, and acting and so on and so forth. But I guess that doesn’t matter for you because Columbia has better Liberal Art majors I guess you can say. UC’s are not terrible to go to, and honestly, in my sole opinion, NYU CAS is a rip-off because you just pay so much money, expecting that you will be catered to in the city, and every wish will come true, and boom, it doesn’t happen. ( That is why it is the #1 dream school.) Don’t go for CAS, stick to UCs they are great too.

it all depends on how much you want it
I think it will be worth it
i know that its really expensive and im kinda worried about that too.
BUT
its seriously my dream, and sounds like yours too…
i dont want to be an old lady thinking back and regret not choosing it.
and there has to be a way of figuring things out.

sign up of financial aid and get a part time job when you’re there
that what im thinking of doing.
if i get in… (hopefully, fingers crossed!)
its the city that never sleeps
people are always busy

Columbia is really expensive too.
but dont they have better financial aid there?
UC i dont know much about.
but STICK TO YOUR DREAMS and you will make it happen im sure :)

i would not expect financial aid based on the income figures you gave, but you need to find out what your family’s EFC is using the College Board calculator. That will give you a realistic expectation. If your EFC is higher than the cost of college, dont expect any financial aid from any school unless it is merit aid aid given without any financial need.

btw…Columbia gives no merit aid. NYU gives some limited merit aid from some schools. It is mostly based on talent in art, theatre or music.

Columbia seems to be a well school, and it’s also located in NYC like NYU. So if you have to go to Columbia you can always plan to attend NYU for graduate if you get accepted.

yeah, Columbia gives better financial aid, plus it’s all grants, while NYU gives out more loans… I mean, I would be extremely happy if I went to Columbia, but with a 3.6 I don’t see that happening. :P

for the past few days I’ve been thinking about a career in journalism, and being in NYC would be really awesome for internships and stuff, I would think.

UC are more bang for the buck especially if you are in-state (about 7-15k). Even if you are out of state, the cost is only about 22k compared to NYU 38k for everyone(in and out of state). So me living in New York would actually be cheaper to go fly to California and attend a UC school lol instead of NYU.

NYU is my dream school also and I got in so I’m happy - but I always was jealous of California State schools and the price for the great education because our SUNY school sucks compare to UC.

Think of UCLA or Berkley. They ranked higher then NYU, way cheaper, in-state, and be better if you not sure what you want to do for the 4 years.

Are you sure those numbers are updated? No way NYU is still 38k. It’s 50+k at the moment, I believe. Berkeley is a lot higher than 22k as well, I’d think.

UCLA is not ranked higher than NYU. There’s no way.

I’m applying to Stern and would LOVE to go to NYU so for me, it’s worth it. I’m not so sure if CAS could be though.

NYU is 38k. But with dorm and board it comes out to be 50k.
NYU is ranked 33.

UCLA is about 26k out-of-state. but with room and board, like NYU, the price will go up but it will still be cheaper.
UCLA is ranked 25
“Costs: 2007-2008 In-state: $7,034; Out-of-state: $26,102”

Ah. I was assuming we were including room and board, not just tuition. That makes sense.

I’m still surprised that UCLA is ranked higher… Very surprised! Is that the USNews ranking?

Yes it is.

nothingatall:
See which would be a perfect match with price, major you are seeking, location ect…

But if NYU is your dream then I say go for it. But I would recommend the UC schools in your situation.

thanks! i think i’m going to put off my decision till I get the actual acceptances/fin aid packets in the mail. I had a friend who had the same dilemma last year… she got into Berkeley and NYU, and NYU was her dream school but Berkeley was much more affordable. She ended up going to NYU and loves it, but is already in a lot of debt.
