Worth of degree/major

Freshman at NYU. I can't exactly say that I hate it here, but I don't really like it either. I'm considering a spring transfer to Rutgers and I was wondering how this might affect my chances at med-school. The price difference is 6k more for NYU. Would a degree from NYU give me an advantage over a degree from Rutgers New Brunswick? Is the NYU name worth enough to stay here?

I also need advice on my major. I initially entered college thinking I'd major in biology, but I'm not so sure now. I love biology and it is my favorite of the science trifecta, but there are so many bio majors applying to med-school that I feel disadvantaged from the start if I continue with bio. I'm considering majoring in chemistry because I think it may leave me with more options if pre-med doesn't work out, and I don't think it's as popular as bio. Opinions?

At the top of the Pre-med forum there are some threads with very good pre-med advice. One states that the school your attending really doesn’t matter as long as it is competitive. In my opinion I’m sure rutgers would be a fine alternative to NYU. In fact Rutgers actually has a great pre-med program and has a great connection with UMDNJ. With regards to majoring in Chem, I wouldn’t do it. The job prospects are poor after graduating and biology has the same bleak job employment opportunities. Hope this helps, and if you truly don’t like NYU, it isn’t worth going there, just go to a school that makes you happy!

I’ll say this again, don’t worry about your major. It will affect your med school application approximately 0%. What will affect your application is:

MCAT ~80%
GPA/name of school/ECs ~20%

If you can major in MCAT studies, I highly recommend it as that is the highest paying under grad degree out there in terms of worth.

I hear from some people that school prestige doesn’t count for too much, as long as it’s competitive. Is this true? If so, I might go through with the Rutgers transfer.

Yes that is true. So going to Rutgers might be a good choice for you. A lot of people I know hated NYU for different reasons and transferred later on. So you’re not alone.
