Worth of National AP Scholar???

Help guys!

I was just looking through this old thread and I saw that alot of people don't consider National AP Scholar as such an honor. Does this mean that it's not going to help much if you apply to an ivy???

Thanks!

It' only prestigious if you get if before senior year.

Each year, only 500 or so juniors get National AP Scholar.

^and I bet all of them are on college confidential

what do you need to get it again?

8 AP's, all with 4's or higher.

While I know that National AP Scholar should exist... it frustrates me nonetheless because many juniors don't even have the opportunity to take 8 AP's junior year. I know that I don't. =(

Haha at our school, the maximum possible AP classes you can take by end of junior year is probably 3 - AP Gov, AP Comp Pol, AP Chem (or AP Bio). 5 self-study APs anyone? I don't think anyone in the history of our 40 or so year old public high school has gotten National AP Scholar before senior year.

Is that award (before senior year) really that prestigious, prestigious enough to spend time learning APs by yourself (note: learning 5 of them to be specific)?

Ooooohhh... Thanks guys!

That's good 'cause I would have taken 9 APs by my Junior Year. :) I'm sure I can get it. I was so worried that it wasn't worth much!!!!

^^And you're self-studying like 5 of those, right?

Distance learning courses exist for all AP tests.

The exact standard for the AP National Scholar award is

It's possible to see statistics about how many students reached the various award levels.

Lol no.... Fortunately, my school let me take 2 APs sophomore year and 6 more on Junior Year plus 1 more during the summer in an online school. :)

^lol....that's almost exactly what I did last year, except I only took 1 AP sophomore year because the AP Env. Science teacher sucks and I knew I would fail. Luckily, she got replaced for my Junior year :P

at my school i was able to take 1 freshman year, 3 sophomore year, and i will take 5 junior year plus 2 extra online.

^^^ I wonder what makes us be such overachievers?

Um....there's something in the water supply?

The only reason I want the award is for recognition during the senior awards ceremony. Don't worry - I'm not that obsessive over it. But it would be...nice. Plus I'm still waiting on a late score before I know whether or not I got it.

The benefits of block scheduling are more APs to take and the better chance to get the award :)

well i wont get it cuz i'd only have taken 7

Sorry, but there was no way that I would have ever self-studied 5 AP classes last year =P

You're only technically supposed to take two AP classes max freshman year (AP US and AP Bio/Chem) but I took AP Envi Sci as an elective.

At my school you can't even take an AP until your Junior year... it is a joke.
