Worth retaking Math II?

I took both the Chemistry and Math II subject tests last spring and got a 660 and 760, respectively. I’m applying to Stanford, MIT, and a few other Ivies, and I’m wondering if it’s worth taking the Math II test again on Oct. 3rd. I’m studying quite a bit for Chem to get it up, but I honestly don’t have enough time to study for Math other than some reviewing the week before. My score is still a bit below the middle 50th (770-800) for MIT Math, though. Would it look bad if I retook the test only to get a similar score? Anyone have thoughts on this?

No.

Regardless of the test, I think that once you hit 750, call it a day. The difference between a 760 and 800 could be a couple of questions, and I’m not sure how statistically significant that will be. Prepping for one of these tests takes some time, which you admit you have precious little of. Personally, I would use that time finetuning your essay, where you have a chance to reveal the true you and better stand out.

@skieurope Thanks for the input. I guess my concern was the fact that my Math score is below the 25th percentile f0r MIT, though I know there’s is likely the highest of anywhere I’m applying.

Perhaps, but I think that even for MIT a 760 with fabulous essays will get you further than 780 with crappy essays. Of course, neither is a guarantee anyway. Good luck.

The Chemistry score is low. For math if you are applying to the UC, it’s worth retaking them because they add up the SAT subject test for math, particular for engineering, nothing holistic about it, particularly UCLA. A parent posted about it.

@DrGoogle I’m not applying to any UCs as my family can’t afford them - mainly just the top ranked schools for CS that meet full financial need as well as some state schools.

I see my newer post got combined with my older one - sorry if double posting is frowned upon!

I wouldn’t take it. But For MIT, if your SAT subject test is lower than the 25% or 720 for science, I would suggest retake it.
