Worth Trying? Unique Situation

I have looked into admissions standards, but I think my situation is pretty weird, so I want to know if I have a good enough chance at these schools to warrant at least applying.

My situation:
1. Low-income, mom's on disability, but I'm not a URM
2. I have an F and some D's on my transcript
3. I was diagnosed with ADHD recently so this semester I'm on medication and getting IEP accommodations (so far I have straight A's, which has never happened, even in elem school)
4. I'm taking math through senior year, but I'll only get through Honors Algebra 2 because I failed in 8th and 9th grade
5. My high school is grades 10-12, which is why all my EC's start sophomore year

Stats:
-2.5 gpa (could get it up to more like 2.9, but its not possible to get my cumulative up to 3.0)
-27 ACT (will retake; going for a 30)
-JV swimming-soph thru senior
-JV tennis-soph
-Newspaper--soph through senior
-Literary Magazine staff--soph thru senior
-Junior Classical League/Latin Club--soph thru senior
-KAY club board member--freshman
-Young Democrats of America--soph thru senior (maybe a leadership position next year)
-Other clubs (Rodeo Club, GSA, Alliance for Social Awareness, Irish-American Club)
-I'm expecting good essays and recs

Schools I'm looking at (all out of state):
Auburn
Alabama
Mississippi
Tennessee
Kentucky
Clemson
Colorado State
Oklahoma
Oklahoma State
Louisiana State
Indiana
Arizona
Arizona State
South Carolina
Nebraska
West Virgina
Colorado

What are you interested in majoring in?

I'm probably going to major in journalism, Classics, or both. I've been thinking about physiology or some physical therapy-related subject, but I'm not really strong enough in math and science.

i recommend going to Louisiana state. you r a perfect applicant!

you have an Irish American club at your school?

I'm jealous.

It's a very open club, actually. We welcome pale people of all varieties.

lionswim - you are a junior, correct? I would suggest that you try posting on College Search and Selection - I think you will get better feedback there. I don't know enough about schools in the areas you specified to comment intellligently on your list without a lot of research - and I don't have the time right this minute to do it. However, there are certainly many schools that you would be accepted at and enjoy attending. I am glad to hear that you have the ADHD under control - that must be a big relief.

When you post a new thread - mention the IEP and ADHD factors - someone out there will be familiar with it and respond.

most of the schools you listed don't require a 3.0 gpa- at least i don't think. but even if they do, your 27 ACT will balance it out...so yes, it's very possible to get into those schools with your current stats. peter jennings dropped out of high school but even he achieved great success in journalism (also my intended career path). albeit, he came from a privileged family, but still his experience shows that high school does not determine future success. you're much better off than he was at this point. which company do you want to work for 5-10 years from now- abc, nytimes?

You don't meet the out-of-state applicant gpa requirement for OU, but you would make the wait-list and most likely would be subsequently admitted. I'm not sure about OSU, my sooner pride burns too brightly!

Ohio_mom, thanks. I've just started looking into ADHD/IEP stuff recently. I thought since I already had a gifted ed IEP, they'd be similar, but...not so much.

gianscoloere, I'm looking into print journalism--maybe newspaper, but maybe magazines. I also would never live in New York, but I guess that's secondary.

gamingrux, I'm in-state at KU and KSU, so I'm about 1000% more likely to go there (guaranteed admission) than any community college.

red_dragone, I think my gpa is OK for OSU; I've looked into it a little. I'm pretty convinced that I'd rather go there than to OU, but my family is half OU fans and half KU fans, so they might lynch me.

like ned flanders said when homer was saved from the flood...

"heaven must be easier to get into than arizona state".

i think theres a school out there for you. good luck.
