Hi all-

Looking to apply to Rose in the fall. 4.0 GPA, 36 ACT, 11 APs by the end of Senior year, etc. Anyways, I hope that I should get in with those stats alone (plus leadership positions and plenty of ECs), but I was wondering if I should wait to apply until after I take the SAT IIs November 1st? I would take them October 1st but unfortunately I have a conference soccer match that I can't miss, so I'm definitely taking the November 1st SAT IIs.

So should I apply as soon as they start accepting applications and not include the SAT II scores, or should I wait until I have those scores back to apply? Would it make a difference in scholarships if I had scored well on SAT IIs (Chem, Physics, Math II)?

Thanks.

P.S. - Visited Rose a few days ago, and absolutely loved it. Are the research and academics as good as they sound?

…You have a 36 ACT. Apply with that, and then send your SAT IIs on later when they arrive, even if an admissions decision has been made. When I applied there, I didn’t get my scholarship info for several months after my acceptance, so I can’t imagine not having SAT IIs there at the time of admission will hurt you in that regard.

I can’t speak from first hand experience, but I have a good friend who will be a senior at Rose this fall, and he has been very satisfied with the academics there (and it takes a lot to please him academically). They have prepared him to get an excellent internship in his desired field that has turned into an offer for a job once he graduates. He also seemed to have a good experience last summer when he worked for the Rose-Hulman Ventures program.

Out of curiosity, what do you hope to study?

I’m looking at (if I go to Rose) double majoring in Computer Science/Software Engineering, with a specialty in either robotics or biomedical

I agree with phanatic’s post. The SAT IIs can be sent later (plus you get your admissions letter way earlier). But, if you’re afraid of getting in with your stats and ec’s, you could just apply with your SAT IIs as well. I sent my SAT IIs much later (it worked with other college admission deadlines, but I wanted to get Rose’s mail asap :D).

I’m currently a Software Engineering major minoring in Mathematics and pursuing a certificate in Imaging Systems. Personally, I don’t think CS/SE double major will be very useful because they are similar (and more so towards employers). I’ve heard the department doesn’t allow those two to be majored together, but I could be wrong about this. In the end, it’s your choice.

The CS/SE department is great! The professors are teachers after all, and they do their job very well. But, academics at Rose are really tough, and you will be most stressed during test weeks and finals. The important thing is… you WILL learn and learn a lot you will. Especially with the CS/SE department, you will find yourself drowned in hard-but-worthwhile projects and homework (REMEMBER, if you don’t understand something, you should go see the professor especially when you skip the intro classes! Keep in mind that the best students aren’t the ones who are independent but collaborative. Trust me on this.).

As for research, there are research opportunities available (think more in the Mathematics and Biomedical departments). Since the professors are geared more towards teaching than research, you won’t find ‘as much’ research projects as in big research universities. There is a program called Ventures a few miles from the main buildings, and you could get a jump start there. You’re best best for research opportunities is to speak to the Professors themselves. I’m sure you’ll be surprised (in a good way) :]. Have fun and good luck!

Awesome post! Thanks a ton. I only am looking at doubling in CS/SE because through talking to one of the professors at my visit there, they said it’s a really easy double since there are a lot of overlapping classes. I toured Ventures as well, and it definitely made me want to go to Rose.

Just curious, what’s the social life like? I ask because I know it’s a really academic school, and I’m curious as to how different it is from Purdue or UIUC as far as the weekend party scene and social events.

There definitely is a social life. haha. There’s plenty to do, especially when you’re a freshman. You’ll have opportunities to join this club and that, this frat and that, this intramural and that. I don’t know if you’re a gamer or not, but there are game parties and tournaments (in LoL and SC haha).
Experience varies, but I’ve had a great social life. :)

Application is now live on our website. You are welcome to submit SAT IIs, but they will constitute less than 5% of our decision if you submit them.
