Would a 28 on ACT reading hurt my application?

I'm a high school senior, applying to highly selective engineering colleges (MIT, Stanford). I took the SAT last winter, and got a 2370. I already sent that score to most colleges I'm applying to. I also took the ACT, and got a 34 on it - but only a 28 on the reading section. Should I send that score to colleges along with the SAT? I figured that since I'm going into engineering, reading won't matter as much, but 28 is still extremely low for such selective colleges. So, should I submit both tests or just stick with the SAT?

If you don’t have to report the ACT score, then don’t. A 2370 SAT looks much better than a 34 ACT. However, Stanford explicitly states that ALL scores from both ACT and SAT must be sent. On the contrary, MIT doesn’t require that all scores are sent.

It’s impossible to get a 34 with a 28 in reading. 36+36+36+28/4 is 33.25. Are you sure you didn’t read something wrong?

Just don’t report your ACT.

Actually, 36+36+36+28/4 is 34, not 33.25.

I do know that Stanford requires all scores, I just listed it as an example of the kind of schools I’m applying to, in terms of selectivity. And thanks for the replies, I guess I just won’t send in the ACT unless a college asks for it.

It does not really matter even if you submit both scores. Most schools would look at the better one of the two. On the other hand, with your ACT score, you may waive the requirement of SAT2 for some schools.

Thanks, that’s a good point. Some of the schools I’m applying to require subject tests with the SAT, and I just took them on October 5 and haven’t gotten the results yet. So sending in the ACT instead could be an option, but only if I get a bad score on one of the subject tests.

^ Also, it would make your application “complete” while pending for new scores.

If the school ask for all scores, I can understand for e.g. if you have taken multiple ACTs then send all ACT scores. If you have taken multiple SATs then send all SAT scores. How about when you have taken multiple SATs and Multiple ACTs? Do you still have to send all ACT and SAT scores even when you only want to use ACT scores?

The reason I ask is it costs money to send scores.

For sending multiple SAT scores, it won’t cost you extra. But sending multiple ACT scores will. So far, I only saw a couple schools including Stanford that require you to send both test scores if you took book. While you may send just all SAT or all ACT to most schools that want all scores. Even for Stanford, you may just send one ACT score and self report the other ACT attempts if it is due to a financial burden.

I think Cornell is another one comes to mind. I believe they need all scores.
