Or is that school just like the ivies? No 90+ GPA, no acceptance. Their SAT requirements seem to be in the above-average (1850-2100), but idk what their GPA averages are. Plus its very prestigious so i dont know if that helps at all.

I don’t know too much, but I’d say off-hand that anything above a 3.6 is good for NYU.

A B is relative…how many other people in your classes have Bs? As? how competitive is your school and your classes?

you will be fine if you can pump up ur esssays
NYU really isn’t that hard to get into at all…stern b-school is a little harder…and tisch is damn near impossible for acting at least (i am trying hehe), but you would only apply to tisch for arts

im in a top ranked HS.

And idk my rank and stuff.

You can definitely get in with a B average but that has to be counter-balanced with awesome SATs, really unique ECs, and great essays.

define unique EC. ive done school work and community work

Most certainly. If you attend a prestigious and academically rigorous high school, you’d have a strong chance with a “B” average.

I’ve seen some pretty unqualified people get into NYU. Of course their families had to donate a big sum of $$$ to get them in.

Avg NYU GPA is a 90 / 3.6…being one or two points (out of 100) lower will hurt but you can get in still as long as you don’t apply to Stern. Stern has abnormally high requirments (1430 average SAT out of 1600) but the rest are much less selective. I’m applying to Stern though :(

NYU is an very easy school, for CC standards. Stern is much harder of course.

If you go to a competitive school, and B makes you top 25% at least, then you have a shot.

n.b. admit rate was 24 percent this year, for CAS.

I wouldn’t underestimate NYU.
Admissions works differently there, because the body of students that apply is so diverse (hell yeah, NYC), that usual benefits, such as URM status, first generation student status, high SAT scores, no longer play a great a role as they would at other top universities.

e.g. I have a friend, 2040 SAT, 3.8 GPA, Hispanic Male, who was admitted to Columbia and waitlisted at Harvard, but flat-out rejected by NYU. It has an enormous pool to go diving in, is what I mean.

Did he ask for Fin Aid?

My understanding is that a 3.0 is low for NYU unless the student has some compensatory thing going for him.

Yeah, his EFC was 0.

He was a classmate. Me? 2150 SAT, 3.7 GPA, Asian-American Male.
Accepted to CAS with 18k in grants + 3,000 in TAP + 4,000 in Federal Work Study. Rejected from Columbia and Harvard. shrug

I go to a really rigorous well known high school, and i’m student body president and have done a lot of leadership. Will that help?

I’m applying to Tisch, and I’m worried my portfolio might not be what they are looking for. I submitted some short stories, and plays. One of my plays is being produced at a professional theatre in Seattle, that’s mainly why I’m applying. Is that the kind of stuff they are looking for?

If anyone knows, I’d appreciate your advice!

I was wondering about GPA for NYU too. Their standards seem so arbitrary after hearing about statistics of people who got accepted/rejected. It seems like above a 3.0 gives you a shot if the rest of your application is strong.

I’m not very informed about Tisch, but I’ve heard that they care primarily about your portfolio. Yours seems like it would be strong.

I applied to CAS, and I really want to get in. I have a 3.65, which is average for them. I would consider it to be the weakest spot on my application. I’m really worried about my rank though because it’s fairly low. I take the most challenging classes but my school is basically crap. There’s all these kids with 22 ACT’s that take the easiest classes and get a 4.0. That sounded very condescending.
Their ACT isn’t actually what makes them so incredibly stupid because I know some very intelligent people with that score.

Anywho, does anyone know how much rank matters if GPA is still okay?

If you don’t get into CAS, you might still get into the college of general studies, which you do two years in and then switch to CAS. That’s what most of the B students I know who got into NYU did.

I have a friend who is a straight B student with the occassional A here and there and she got accepted EA to NYU. However, she is a VERY strong writer (she wrote wonderful essays) and she is a fabulous dancer. I would say that if your EC’s and the rest of your application are strong, you definitely have a fair shot at getting in. Just make your unique qualities known and you should be absolutely fine!
