I am currently a declared computer science major. I chose this major basically because I love technology. Also, based on what I’ve heard, landing a well paying job after graduation would be easier with this degree.
There are several reasons as to why I am considering changing my major to this interdisciplinary major. First, I don’t know if I could handle the workload of a computer science degree. I don’t hate programming, but I struggle so much at it… I feel like I understand the material, and I could complete the homework we’re assigned, but once we’re assigned the big programming assignment at the end of every week I get so lost. I’m only taking the second intro to computer science class, and the classes will only get harder from here. Though I’m decent at math, I hate the subject. And I’m dreading taking physics. I fear that my GPA will suffer and that I’m just not cut for this major.
Second, I’m very interested in the media, film, entertainment, and cultural aspects that the media and cultural studies degree offers. This major also sounds more appealing to me than a computer science major. In addition, I’d love to work in entertainment. However, I’m afraid of struggling financially after college and actually finding a well paying job.
Crossing these two majors together, however, would combine all the things I love. It would also reduce the stress of getting a plain computer science degree. The problem is, is that I’m not sure if this would appeal to employers or not (I’ve heard that an interdisciplinary studies major is looked down upon). I could either choose to hustle through and get a computer science degree, change my major to media and cultural studies, or obtain a computer science degree. I’ve been stressing out about my major… any advice would help.
