Would a MBA be of any use for me?

So I'm not very knowledgeable of the MBA (which I guess is why I'm posting here).

I've been thinking of pursuing an MBA at some point in the future, but I don't know if I should, or can?

a) Why I want an MBA:
-I think it'll be easier for me to be hired in a management level position once I have some experience. I think I'll also command a higher salary. I also believe having a business degree will give me some skills and background to compensate for my crappy undergraduate degree.

b) My background:
-I graduated from a top university with a BA in History. It's a pretty useless degree and has no real market value. However, I'm currently working as an Operations Analyst at a Fortune 100 company. I'm planning to work here as long as I can as it's a great company.

c) Why I don't know if I should get an MBA:
-I don't know if it's necessary. I was only thinking of getting an MBA if, for instance, I get laid off or if I just somehow never get promoted to a manager level position. I'm not even sure how beneficial an MBA would be for me. Some managers in my company have an MBA, and some don't. I hear from a lot of people though that an MBA is necessary nowadays. I've also heard things like an MBA will make you overqualified. And lastly, I've heard things like an MBA is useless...haha.

So what do you guys think? I have a BA in a non relevant field + real work experience, but will a MBA actually have any benefit for me? Or would it just be another useless Masters degree?

*NOTE: I'm only considering MBAs from top schools. I wouldn't go to some crappy no name school for an MBA.

You need to know your career goal. Are you thinking of a career switch or just want to get to management level within your company? Think about your ROI. An MBA will cost you $100K plus 2 years of lost salary.

lol, wrong thread

Your post doesn’t really help . It doesn’t contribute anything…

Yes, I know my career goal. I’m not looking for a career switch. I want a management level position within my company (or a similar company). I don’t know what my ROI is going to be because

a) I don’t know which school has accepted me, as I have not taken the GMAT nor have I applied to B-School.

b) I don’t know what my salary will be in 5 years.

c) I don’t know what job prospects I will have coming out of said unknown school.

If you don’t know, find out.
Find out how much a low level manager in your company makes so you get an idea.
Find out what the average pay of a starting MBA in your interested field.
You said you are only interested in top schools, look them up in their websites.

If my post doesn’t prompt you to do some thinking and work on your own, then I doubt you will be a successful MBA candidate.

If I wanted to do my own research and think on my own, I wouldn’t have posted on this board. I want a quick answer and don’t want to spend time doing research because I’m not seriously considering a MBA at this present time in my life.

Well, if you are not ready to spend time doing research to find out if an MBA is right for you, it’s probably not right for you then. When considering an MBA, there are several things you need to consider- finances being one of them. Since you work for a Fortune 100 company, they may offer a Tuition Reimbursement program, which helps pay for your MBA (assuming you get a B or better). But again, that would take research to see if your company offers that and I’m sure you don’t want to be bothered with it.

Good luck.
