This summer I participated in a 1-month project at a major software company. Basically, it included an intensive course on certain programming languages and its main goal was creating an application. Throughout the project we were helped by employees from that company. The application I created will be published in several months. Would this qualify as research?

I don’t think so. Do you mean in the sense of scientific/CS research? Making a piece of software isn’t research.
For what purpose are you concerned if this is considered research?

What’s important will be that you went off and learned about the work and the teamwork/collaboration, had a result. It is fine to include. Not sure if you should call it research, an internship or just list it under the name of the company/program. If it was a selective opportunity, maybe you can note that. Many kids do something that gets released; in that respect, it’s not just having it made public, but the actual value of the app to others.
