I have an uncle who went to Colby College and, I don't know yet where I want to go, but I was wondering whether it counts as legacy. Does it have to be parents?

Having an uncle go to a school will give you a small boost in admissions, especially if he writes you a great recommendation. But it won't be very significant, it needs to be a parent for the application to get the special scrutiny that many schools give to legacies.

At most schools, no.

oh ok thanks

I think an admissions counselor would laugh their ass off if they received a recommendation letter from an applicant's uncle. Do you expect him to be non-biased? "My nephew is a rather well-intentioned slacker who tries hard, often fails, but always looks on the bright side. Admit him."

i kind of have the feeling that if you have had quite a few uncles/aunts go to a school, it may count. I have no reference for this, but if a school were to build up/work on family loyalty, I see uncles/aunts as included in that family, if there is an indication that the school has significant influence in it.

I don't know, of course. what do others think?

hahhhaahah john thats funny

hmmm yeah i would think if its a couple extended fam members it would count as legacy.

my 4 uncles all went to the same college, but my dad and grandpa did too, so i dont need to worry actually.... :)

You can certainly mention him, I dont know if it will help much, if at all in the admissions process though.
