Would any of these be considered a hook?

I'm a good student, with good grades, lots of ECs, and passable SATs. However, I know that just based upon my numbers I won't be anything "special" to many colleges.

I was wondering if any of these things could be considered a "hook:"

*Dual Citizen (Greek and American), fluent in both English and Greek

*Passion in photography (submitting a photo portfolio, was Photo Editor of yearbook, etc.)

*Come from a very international family. In addition to being both Greek and American, I have two half sisters who are American and Belgian, my mother is a Greek who grew up in Istanbul (Turkey), and I have one Aunt who lives in Holland and another in Paris. I have traveled to many places and gained a broad cultural understanding as a result--> Possible essay topic?

Thanks for the feedback.

You know, those are all very interesting, but it is to my understanding that it all matters on how you convey your passions and your "hooks" to the colleges through essays and etc. For example, there are probably thousands of applicants who list photography as their passion, but can you really stand out among those people?

"Hooks" are generally something that make you really stand out. Such as something that has only happened to you and no one else that has applied. I'd bet a fair bit of money that someone else who is applying is also half Greek (or whatever).

Don't worry about finding your hook- just make yourself stand out as much as you can with what you have.
