Honestly I picked biology because I am really interested in the subject, but i don’t want to be a doctor or anything. Are pretty much all the people who go through a bio major trying to get into med school? or is there a good amount of people like me?

I am in the same exact spot. Looking to do something with biology, maybe pharmacology if that isn’t too chemistry-dominated. Hoping to see some responses that will help me decide between UCD and UCSB

The College of Biological Science attracts many types of people and by no means does this mean that all are gunner-type pre-med kids. Although there are many people who start at Davis wanting to go into medicine, many will eventually branch off when their priorities and life goal changes (which many atimes do). There are lots of people who want to go into medicine, pharmacy, dental, physical therapy, and other professional schools. However, there are also a lot of people who want to go into research in industry or attend graduate school focusing on molecular biology, evolutionary biology, etc. I would say that there are lots of people who are majoring in the Biological Science just because they’re interested in biology. If you are concerned that there are gunner-type of competitive students at Davis, don’t be. Everyone here is really cooperative, nice, and relaxed. No one will ever sabotage you in chemistry lab or toss your homework away. You will be surprised at how your interest will change in college. Don’t buy into the whole pre-med/medicine hype many people throw around. 90%+ of people who come into college wanting to go to med school will end up not going at all. Who knows, you might end up wanting be a doctor if you go to Davis!

If you like a good mix of Biology/Chemistry, try the “Biochemistry and Molecular Biology” major. I would say it is 75% Biology 25% Chemistry.

@bmb thanks, i appreciate the long response, it helps And totally, yea i could end up changing my mind. Are you there now?

the catch is that i was waitlisted to Davis so i’m crossing my fingers hoping i’ll get in.

Recently graduated. Good luck

@bmb, also thanks so much for the in depth response. I found the majors and their descriptions on the Davis website and it was beyond helpful with possible careers and a description of the types of classes the major requires. Time to submit my SIR!

No, you don’t have to be pre-med. I know tons of people doing research in microbio to ecology and they are having the time of their lives at UCD…pretty much the greatest research facility ever.
