I’m an admissions consultant for Harvard Square Essays, and we employ only Harvard-educated editors who know first-hand what it takes to get into an elite school.
Why would anyone ask strangers, whose qualifications (and character) are totally unknown, to critique an essay? If it’s good, anyone could steal it. If it’s bad, how do you know the readers are going to recognize this?

I know this is commonly done on this site and elsewhere, but I think it’s pointless at best and foolish at worst. Why not get someone who actually knows you personally and who is qualified to critique your work to read it? Ask an English teacher, a history teacher, your guidance counselor, or yes, even a professional consultant if you have the means to pay for one, to read it for you.

The opinions of 15 strangers, even if they are competent and well-meaning, do not count for more than the opinion of someone who knows you.
