Hi, I’m a senior in high school and was wondering which college I should ED to. I have narrowed it to UPenn and Duke. I was told that being Hispanic gives you a slight advantage.
My stats:
GPA
Freshman: 3.59
Sophomore: 3.81
Junior: 4.33
Total Unweighted: 3.8
Total Weighted: 3.91
Testing:
ACT: 33
Superscore 34 (English 36 Math 31 Reading 35 Science 34)
AP Scores:
US History: 4
Psychology; 4
Extracurriculars:
Freshman Football
Study Buddies (tutoring elementary school kids)
TAP program: (assist special education kids with their schoolwork)
Soup Kitchen Volunteer (sort and examine food donations)
Busser at Restaurant
Mock Stock Club: Founding member junior year, VP of operations senior year
Took a Principles of Accounting class at UCSD
Own Instagram and Ebay account buying and reselling clothes.
Ethnicity: Hispanic
I know it’s a slim chance, even as I am applying early decision, but what do my odds look like?
I would apply as a business major to UPenn and an Economics major to Duke. UPenn is obviously superior for what I am interested in but it balances it out since it has a lower ED acceptance rate
So you’re thinking of applying ED to Wharton or Duke?
Being hispanic doesn’t hurt (that’s an understatement). The difference in ED acceptance rates is so minimal that you should just apply to Wharton if you think it is “obviously superior”. It would make no sense to apply ED to Duke if it isn’t your first choice.
Are you from a disadvantaged background? That could make a difference in how competitive the app is.
Your weighted GPA is on the lower side, but ECs are pretty good and I think you’ll have a shot. Being Hispanic obviously helps. Good luck!
Thanks for your reply. I’m not from a disadvantaged background. I think the ed rate for Wharton is lower than the entire ed rate at Penn. I just feel like Penn’s too big of a reach.
Can your parents afford 280k for college?
Duke is need blind, so being disadvantaged has no bearing. IMO being Hispanic is definitely a boost for apps.
I’d say, go for the one you want.
I believe that they are in the position to pay the tuition.
Thanks for your comment. What do you think my chances are to get in?
