I was just wondering how strictly dorm room rules are enforced. I know it is likely different for each college, but I figured I'd ask anyway. Basically, fridges up to 4 cubic feet are allowed in the dorm, but I want to get this fridge that looks really great and cheap, and has excellent reviews:

Only problem, it is 4.5 cubic feet, one half cubic foot more than is allowed. I think this would count as a pretty minor rule break. If I brought it in, do you think the dorm supervisor (or whatever the person in charge is called) would believe me if I lied and said it's exactly 4 cubic feet? I doubt they actually measure/check to see exactly what the volume is unless it looks much too big, and I doubt an extra half foot would be too noticeable. What if it was the only fridge in the dorm, or I put it under my bed? Would that be a good compromise? I really want this fridge, but don't want to waste the money or go through the hassle of returning it if I'm not allowed to keep it.

Depends on the school.
At my old school I brought a fridge that was significantly larger, the RA told me it was too big, but they still let me keep it.

If your school has a board here, I’d ask to see how strict they are with housing since it usually depends on the school. I just know that at my school, they’d go insane if someone didn’t have the correct fridge.

My school didn’t care. The RAs weren’t going to go to everyone’s room and measure people’s fridges, or check for illegal appliances. I wouldn’t worry about it, just keep the receit just in case and I’m sure there is a Wal mart somewhere near your school. That way if they seriously won’t let you have it (I would think it would be highly unlikely), you could just exchange it or get a refund.

Of all the rules a school has, I doubt they would choose to be stringent about fridge size.

Some schools are very strict with the housing regulations.

If you haven’t purchased the item yet, I wouldn’t recommend doing so. Find one that fits within your specific student housing guidelines.

Tayman, the dorm’s “compromise” may be that they force you to put it in storage. Then you’ll be left with nothing.
Just buy one that fits within the guidelines.

Like I said, mine is legal and when our rooms are inspected before breaks (they don’t go through our stuff, they check that the window latches work, etc) I actually tape all my paperwork to my fridge and my microwave to prove that they are legal. My fridge has a third of the amperage draw allowed and is very much below the allowed size, but it’s tall and thin and has a separate exterior door for the freezer, so apparently it seems bigger than it is. I get so much **** for it.

Yeah, I wouldn’t do it. At the school I’m going to next year, they search the rooms during break and confiscate anything that doesn’t meet guidelines. Last year I was visiting and there were over a dozen lamps in the staff office that they wouldn’t return to anyone until they were going home.
