Would canceling a fafsa that needs verification affect already approved grant?

Hi,
I just recently posted a thread with the following question in it but it was somewhat overlooked. (Or the question wasn't answered.) I would just like your thoughts from every perspective & knowledge on this:

I filed for FAFSA 2009/2010 (Fall/Winter) before I applied for FAFSA 2008/2009 (Summer). I am approved for FAFSA 2009/2010 & I already accepted the grant.

Unfortunately, I got randomly selected for verification on my Summer 2008/2009 Fafsa.

What will happen to my 2009/2010 grant if I don't continue with the 2008/2009 verification process? Summer session isn't long & by the time the process is complete...everything would be over with & I'll probably have a job to pay for the short summer session by then (I just spoke with an ex-employer).

Will anyone flag & scrutinize my 2009/2010 fafsa because I was selected for verification for 2008/2009 and not complete the process? Will my 2009/2010 grant be rescinded & placed under verification? What if of 3 years that I attend school. I only applied for aid one year? I am thinking of asking a family member for help in the future years.

I have not turned in any documents yet. Thank you for your time and thoughts.

I got very confused on your other thread, but if you are asking if you “can” not correct a FAFSA that you know has incorrect information and hope no one verifies it, I think you already know the answer to that.

Hi Cap,
I guess I am asking because in case I get desperate & get carried away with my wishful thoughts, the answers that I receive would keep me grounded with reality check. Please don’t judge me, I will be honest & admit that I am just desperate & know that I am deserving of the aid. Let me think aloud and get real perspectives/knowledge from others.

Thanks for your thoughts Cap.

What is the problem with the verification process? All you do is send the school whatever it is that they request…which will be your tax returns from 2007 (if it’s a 2008-09 FAFSA) and whatever other supporting information requested. REALLY…it’s not a big deal. We were verified FOUR times…and the kid didn’t get a nickel of need based aid. We just sent the school what they requested and called it a day.

I think you know the answer…if you were married but filed your FAFSA as if you were still single then you need to correct it. It sounds like the “summer” money is fine because it was based on the previous years FAFSA…when you weren’t married. Just correct the “new” FAFSA and see what the results - your EFC is - before you worry about the next step. I don’t think it matters if you did your taxes as married & filing separately…you just need to make sure your current FAFSA matches your income tax return and your husband’s. The first thing is to get the cart behind the horse instead of ahead of the horse. If I’m misinterpreting all your posts…I apologize.

Hi everyone,

sk8rmom somehow uplifted my spirit in my previous thread, so I think I have the nerves to go through with the process now.

Sorry, I must have missed the last couple posts on the previous thread. Glad you’re getting it all sorted out.
