For the last few years I've designed, coded, and created my own websites. Would this be considered an extracurricular I can talk about and put on my Common App. in the Activities section?

Thanks!

Thanks!

i would definitely think so, especially if you are planning to major in something like computer science or computer engineering. have you done anything with the websites? for example, i used webs.com as a template for a simple website that i have maintained for the past year and i used it as the general website for a tutoring service that i organized

I would definitely think so. It would help your application if it pertains to something you want to major in. Add it to your list!

Yep, I plan on majoring in Computer Engineering, so I thought they would be interested in hearing about some computer-related experience that has been a huge part of me. The reason I am hesitant about including it as an extracurricular is that it was not run by my school or anything - I like to think of it as one of my passions and a hobby.

These sites are registered (one is a .net, and the other a .com). I’ve done many different things with the websites, and I’m constantly working on new concepts, testing new code, and redesigning them.

That sounds really interesting ricepicker, and a neat way to show information about your tutoring service!

The more complex, interactive and cutting edge your sites are, the better. The higher the level of software involved, good. If they serve a business purpose (yours or a client’s,) good. Just creating and maintaining is not enough. If this is simply a case of making a myspace or blog site…you know how many people can do this nowadays, with simplified programs.
If it is all of the former, “package” it the right way on the CA, show that your skills place you ahead of most. Adcoms probably see tons of kids today with creative web skills.

Thanks lookingforward.

To quickly answer that in short, I’ve done A LOT more than just create a facebook account or something similar, such as a blog. Anyone can do that and I wouldn’t want to waste whoever is reading my application’s time.

Thanks again for giving for the advice! I will do my best to show my skills on the CA.

You can use “web developer,” then describe. Or the equivalent. You can make it apply.

Yes, you can!! My son is a proof of that, he got into reaches. He was totally into it and had done more than web design, although thats how it had started. His essay was about his passion.
