the threads here indicate Dartmouth gives more FA than Duke, any examples?

So intitally duke offered me 14k a year plus 5k in loans while dartmouth offered me only 5k in loans. I appealed dartmouths offer and they bumped me up to 33k a year loan free while duke remained the same. be patient and you should be very happy

dartmouth does not spend as much on athletics as duke does, so they have more money to spend on the general student population. duke gives athletic scholarships and dartmouth does not.

Dartmouth is tuition free if your family income is below 75k, they are need blind to all students (including internationals), they meet 100% of demonstrated need, there is no work study required, and if you choose to work at an unpaid internship or especially if you want to do research, you can get tons of money to cover expenses (I’ve people getting as much as 10k), and your expected summer earnings requirement can be waived.

Financial aid is very strong. Financial aid also can help you out with a lot of things once you are here, including tutoring, DOC trips, and also I believe Fraternity/Sorority dues.

From USN&WR…

At Dartmouth, 50% of students get grants from the college, leaving an average cost of $19,584.
At Duke, 38% of students get grants leaving an average cost of $21,820.
All elite schools have plenty of students from wealthy families. But I have a personal rule of thumb that schools where less than 40% of students get need based grants, the student body is not only wealthy, the school means to keep it that way.
No Ivy League school has a percentage as low as Duke’s.
