Would Duke be good for me?

My sister goes to Berkeley and my aunt also lives nearby, so I've spent a lot of time in that area and I love the atmosphere at Cal. I've never really though I'd end up at a university like Duke, but after reading a lot about it, I'm starting to really love the idea of going there. However, there is absolutely no way I can find the time (or money) to visit Duke before May 1, and I'm really, really conflicted right now.

Academics-wise, Duke is perfect for me, but I'm not entirely sure as to whether it fits my personality. I don't really like big parties, and Greek life does not interest me in the least. Music is a big deal to me. I live in Los Angeles, so I have access to a decent music scene here, and I go to shows as often as I can afford it, probably averaging around 2 or 3 each month. How is the music scene in Durham? Do a lot of bands play there? I'm into Arcade Fire, Feist, The Decemberists, Magnetic Fields, Built to Spill, that kind of stuff, pretty typical for someone who's into "indie" music. (I'm not gonna start a debate about what is "indie" or anything on here, haha.) And I'm also not into any sports besides hockey and gymnastics, haha.

Right now, I'm between Berkeley, Duke, and Amherst (and Swarthmore to a lesser degree). Also note that cost is not an issue, Duke's financial aid makes its cost just a little bit more than Cal's tuition. Please help!

I’m afraid I can’t comment on the indie music/concerts, so hopefully someone else will drop by to help you on that. (I vaguely remember reading something about some Indie bands in The Chronicles, but I’m afraid I don’t remember much from it.)

However, about Greek Life and etc, about 40% (more or less) of the student body is actually in a sorority or fraternity. I am definitely not one of them. I don’t feel like I lose out from this, simply because I have not particular interest in large parties. I’m also not huge into sports (before I came to Duke, anyway). I am an admitted football fan and was crushed that Duke football is less-than-stellar, but I actually had no interest in Duke basketball before I arrived. However, some of the sports hype is less about the sports itself, and more about just showing some school spirit, supporting the team, and having fun. Therefore, while sports are a big part of the social life here, you can easily find people who couldn’t care less.

While I don’t attend music concert, Duke and Durham have a pretty big performance entertainment section it seems. This means plays, musicals, or dance performances, in addition to classical music concerts. I’m not sure if that falls for any of your interest, but if it does, it’s pretty easy to get tickets to both Duke production and professional productions.

Sorry I couldn’t be of more help! Good luck!

EDIT: I did find this though. Not sure how accurate it is, but maybe it’ll be of some help? (There’s a bus that runs from Duke to UNC-Chapel Hill, by the way. )

Hopefully this will help with determining whether Duke fits your personality. :)

Honestly, it comes down to if you like balance and appreciate it. If you like balance, come to Duke. It epitomizes the Duke experience.

Also, as the above poster mentioned, Durham and Duke have an INCREDIBLE arts/music scene. I didn’t expect it, but I love it. Duke is very sing-y/dance-y to be more accurate, but Durham is very musically rich and vibrant. There always seems to be concerts going on (free ones, too!).

As a fellow Californian, my advice is to leave CA and experience something outside of the bubble. :)

My daughter (also from California ) camped out and scored season tickets to the new Durham Performing Arts center.

Doesn’t look “Indie”, though.

^ A sick indie scene, not too far away. Check it out.

Yep, Cat’s Cradle is a GREAT venue for indie music. You can take the Robertson Bus over to UNC (free, runs every 30 minutes), then walk over to it. It’s a 20 minute walk: [UNC Chapel Hill Chancellor: Morehead Planetarium & Science Center to Cat’s Cradle - Google Maps](<a href="Google Maps)

This is exactly my same dilemma. I’ve narrowed my choices down to Wesleyan and Duke, which are on very opposite ends of the spectrum. I really like Duke but am a bit wary about it for the exact same reasons as you. That being said, the fact that you are nervous about that too makes me feel better that there are more of us out there that could potentially be going to Duke hahaa. Don’t know if that makes you feel any better, but it helped me a bit, so thanks :)

I am in the exact same boat as you!

I love Duke and the academics, being in an environment that I have never been to, but I’m thinking about UT Austin not merely because of the Business Honors Program and Plan II, but because Austin as a city has great vibes. Their music scene is too sick to pass up as a music-obsessive.

Also, I’m not a partyer, or really, I’m not a drinker. UT definitely has parties, but so many people that do other things.

So, if I end up going to Duke, maybe we could all just revel in our non-partying, music-loving ways. :)

WakeUp, glad to know I’m not alone. :stuck_out_tongue: Good luck with your decision!

And thanks everyone for your input. :]
