Would i apply to UC Berkeley as a Freshman or as a Transfer student?

Hey guys,
So I just graduated high school in May, and after a long self debate, I decided that right after high school I would head to Community College. This fall I signed up and I am currently only taking 6 units ( which I know is nothing in the long run). My problem now is that I am really interested in UC Berkeley after visiting the campus and experiencing the college lifestyle. On the application it says that anyone with any college credit/experience, other than summer courses after high school, must apply as a Transfer student. I was really hoping to apply as a Freshman. What are my options if I only have these 6 units? Should I drop them so that I can be an official Freshman or are they irrelevant? I really do not want to continue in Community College, PLEASE HELP :frowning:

You should go see an advisor asap. You are now a transfer and you may still be even if you drop. Check before doing. You read the UC site so you know the rules and they only take jr level transfers. How is it that the long debate is so changeable , or the decision didn’t include college exploration and tours in this lengthy debate. In any case, you are no way assured of a Berkeley admission.

You are 100% correct. I wasn’t prepared or armed with the correct knowledge or assistance to make a good decision for myself and I take full responsibility for that. Thank you for your advice.

Can you withdraw without a W?

Unless you were an uber-smart student in hs, the odds of your getting into Berkeley as a freshman are slim to none. Once you have a transcript from a college for fall term, you can’t transfer as a freshman, anyway. Trying to do so will just waste a year. You’re better off going to CCC and applying next year, although at 6 units for one term you will have a lot of catching up to do.

You COULD apply to be a freshman if you dropped the college courses without anything showing up on your transcript, but you may be past this deadline. It is today for my college, and I know it has passed already for others. As @lindyk8 mentioned, unless you had an absurdly good HS transcript / extracurriculars, it is unlikely that you will get into UCB.

If you decide to commit to CCC and transfer - you can apply to another CCC that is on the quarter system, and perhaps take online classes there (i.e. Foothill College, De Anza - neither of these schools have started yet, so you wouldn’t be behind at all if you were to make that decision), or make up for your low units this term with summer classes. You need 60 units to be eligible for transfer - AP units, if you have any, add to that total. Plan with taking 15 units per semester (more or less) - summer classes, although rigorous, can help you finish a large amount of units in a short amount of time, so that’s something to consider.

Bottom line, talk to a counselor ASAP. It’s possible to transfer to UCB (easier imo than getting in as a freshman), but you need to make your decision immediately, and plan accordingly.

You may not be a competitive candidate for application to UCB as a freshmen.
Doing 2 years at cc and then transfer into UCB may be your best bet.
