My parents want me to go to UMBC(University of Maryland- Baltimore county) but I got accepted into Rutgers… New Brunswick…I really want to go there… but my parents told me to transfer after 2 tears if I really wanted to go. but if I were to transfer what would I need to get accepted again? Would I have a higher chance of getting in? GPA wise what would I need? Please help and give advice. Should I just go to Rutgers directly?
Why do your parents want you to attend UMBC? Is it an issue of cost? Can they afford to send you to Rutgers, and is Rutgers offering any aid?
Yes, if you attend another college and want to transfer, you will need to apply as a transfer and be accepted as a transfer. The GPA that you will need and other requirements for for transfer applicants should be available on Rutger’s website. However, in another two years, these may be different, so you should look again when you are thinking to apply for a transfer.
I believe its cost. And they want me to stay close. Rutgers financial package hasn’t come out yet, but I don’t believe they will give much. UMBC is in-state for me…and UMBC is giving me $10K from the school itself and fasfa. But im waiting for state grant at the moment. My sister goes to UMBC right now and she pays only couple thousand, so I imagine i would get the same about… Rutgers on the other hand… tuition itself is already 30K…but my mom is telling me to transfer to Rutgers after 2 years to save money. I don’t know if that would hurt my chances if being able to attend or not. I hear transferring is harder than applying as a Highschool student.
Public colleges don’t generally have a lot of money to give to OOS students. Are your parents willing and able to spend ~$45k/year on Rutgers’?
it depends on what school you would want to go to, which school would you transfer to within rutgers? Or what major are you considering and I can let you know what schools that corresponds to
They think 45K. A year i over 4 years… also why they said just transfer after 2 years so I only pay 45K for 2 years.
I want to transfer to Rutgers New Brunswick, School of Engineering.
Middle 50% who get accepted have gpa of 3.4-3.9
If you want my opinion, since you are out of state, I honestly believe you should just attend UMBC or another college that would make you pay less for all 4 years. The most important thing is getting a degree, you don’t wanna get out of college and be over $50k in debt just because you wanted to enjoy yourself for 2 years. My classmates from HS are only in their 2nd year of college and many of them are already over $50k in student loans (and they are In-State students). You really don’t want to worry about paying all that money back after you graduate. Unless Rutgers is offering to pay most of the tuition for you which I doubt, its not even worth.
I don’t understand this. So your parents are willing to pay ~$45k/year for the last 2 years? How much are they willing to spend for the first 2 years? If they won’t pay ~$180k for you to spend 4 years at Rutgers then you can’t go.
yeah, because I’m only paying ~$10K a year for in-state now. But they want me to graduate from a better college so they want me to transfer after 2 years so my degree would be from Rutgers. I would save ~$60k if i stayed in state first 2 years.

Its not really because I was to enjoy myself. If I really wanted to enjoy myself in college I would go to Rutgers for all 4 years. But, graduating out of Rutgers would also help me more with finding jobs in the future. Its a really good school compared to UMBC. I’m really just going to UMBC then transfer to Rutgers because my parents want me to stay in state first 2 years.
Look into the 2020 RU transfer thread to get an idea of what it is taking fo this year to have kids transfer. Also what major will you be when you transfer, I do not know if RU will accept all your credits from UMBC

These are the statistics for the middle 50% who got accepted to Rutgers in 2019. With many majors 2+2 works, however, you will need to be careful when transferring to a credit intensive major not to end up with excess / unneeded gen ed credits. Remember, the investment of college also includes opportunity costs. If you extend your time by 1 yr, you are also giving up 1 year of earnings. At $65-70,000, for example, this far outweighs tuition differential. You will want to carefully map your courses and possibly consider a 1+3 compromise. Also, ROI is an important factor for schools- the argument that ones just needs to graduate from any school is foolish. Ignoring hiring outcomes is like ignoring quality ratings for an automobile purchase.
