Would I be considered a first generation college student?

I'm planning on transferring from a community college and this is my first time filling out the common app so I thought I'd ask here.

My dad did not finish high school.
My mom went to trade school.
Would I be considered a first generation college student?

The definition of first gen varies between colleges, for some it’s if a degree was earned, for others it’s if college was attended at all, and tech/trade colleges are another gray area.

Generally applications don’t ask, ‘Are you first gen to college?’, but rather for the academic history of each of your parents (eg. college attended, dates, degrees earned) and then they decide if you fit their definition of first gen.

If this is not the case, call/email each college and ask.

My dad finished 8th grade and my mom was a beautician ( trade school). I was first generation. You are too.
