Would I be considered a First Generation Student?

My dad does not have a Bachelor's Degree.
However, my mom attended a 4-year college in Peru and graduated.

And now were in the U.S and I'm applying to colleges.

I was thinking that I was not a first generation since my mom went to school. But I heard by some that I might be considered, since neither of them attended school in the U.S

Kinda confused.

thoughts appreciated!

You are not a first gen college student.

Agree with ED, if a parent has graduated from college anywhere, you are not first gen.

I’m sorry if this question goes on a bit of a tangent, but just how significant is it to be a first generation college student?

No, you aren’t a first generation student. I was in the same situation with both of my parents graduating from foreign universities. I don’t think it will matter for hardly any schools. THere are a few scholarships that are only for first generation students but the overwhelming amount of scholarships are not focused on that.

It is a small but tangible boost.
