If I started at one college but dropped out for personal issues (family issues at home, needed to go back) before the end of the first semester, could I apply to any colleges as a freshman? Or would the fact that I started college somewhere make me automatically count as a transfer student?

Depends how many credits you earned at your first college. Usually a student needs at least 30 transferable semester credits to be considered a transfer student.

Your title and situation seem to be in conflict, I’m assuming you’re asking if you’re fr or transfer, not fr or soph?? It sounds like you started as a fr, dropped out before completing any courses and currently have no college credits and are not in school, correct?

Who is considered a transfer applicant varies from school to school. And if you didn’t actually complete the semester, that adds a complication. You need to call up the schools you’re interested in, tell them your situation and ask whether you should apply as a fr or transfer. Are you not interested in going back to your old school??
