Would I fit in at UNC?

I'm a 17 year old kid from the Pacific Northwest. On my UNC "chance me"s I have been told I have a good chance. Now that I can seriously think about UNC I wonder if i would feel at place.
Being a liberal kid whose grown up on the Pacific Coast is the culture shock going to be too great? I'm a fairly preppy kid who plays varsity sports and is very into the athletic scenes. I want to become a sportswriter/broadcaster and one of the major reasons I'm considering UNC is because of their excellent journalism program as well as their sports successes.

I guess what I want to know is: Can a fairly preppy, liberal, "seattle type" kid who isn't a big partier but isn't opposed to going to parties fit in with a crowd of mostly southern kids? I'm outgoing but idk if the fact that most kids experiences growing up would be very different from mine would affect that.

Thanks for any help.

I would say yes. Chapel Hill is a lot different than the rest of NC. It's pretty liberal and doesn't really fit into the south. When you say southern kids I'm not quite sure what you mean but I can tell you it's not that 'southern' at all really.

yea man, you'll def. fit right along. Everyone here is laid back and easy going.

chances are you'll be completely different after your 1st semester.

hi

everyone has worries about fitting in, but I think that if you just try to be friendly, people will like you, even if you are totally different.
I think unc is diverse in the types of people there are, so I don't think you have to worry about it! =)

I really think everybody can find his or her niche at UNC. You sound like you would fit in super easily, what with the love of sports, the liberalism, and the outgoing factor. There are a lotttt of people at Carolina who have those traits in common with you. I think most people at Carolina identify with at least one of those, actually. ;)

i'd say the majority of your classmates at carolina will be fairly preppy, liberal, and athletic. UNC definitely isn't a bunch of tractor-driving, Bible-thumping typical southerners, and a lot of people (particularly those who hate state ;) ) will tell you that with pride.
also, i can honestly tell you that everyone can find a niche at UNC. i don't know ONE PERSON who dislikes it here, and i know a lot of diverse people with varying interests. carolina wasn't my first choice, but i've grown to positively love it.

I think you'll definitely be able to fit in. One of my good friends at school is from Oregon and he has told me he feels right at home.

yeah I honestly don't think we are that southern. perhaps if you go to a small town somewhere in the south, you'll find people like that... but UNC doesn't really have those stereotypical southern people. I mean I haven't gone there yet, I'm going there in the fall, but from people at orientation, I really didn't feel like anyone was that southern.

I moved from the north 4 years ago... from minnesota, and 2 yrs before that I lived in Canada. I didn't think NC was that different compared to those places. I've gone to several all-state activities, lots of people from all over NC.... I feel like generally these people aren't that southern!

you'll fit in I promise!!

As awful as it sounds if you're an athlete girls love you, even though a lot of male athletes can be ******bags they'll love you. And yes it sounds like you'd fit in fine ;)

Oh, and for the record, I'm not saying you're a ******bag because you're athletic :)

Heck I'm the one that's going to have trouble fitting in at UNC and I only live less than 100 miles away. State just didn't seem prestigious enough though. Besides, its good to get out of your comfort zone sometimes.

yes. 10 char

You sound exactly like a lot of my guy friends

I agree with other posters: "fairly preppy, liberal, and athletic" could describe a lot of (if not most) UNC-Chapel Hill students.

You should fit in fine :)

Just to clarify, I wouldn't be playing varsity sports at Carolina. I was just trying to talk about me. Intramurals would be my limits :)

or perhaps clubs. Clubs are more competitive than the intramurals but less than the intercollegiate sports.

i mean..naturally the majority of people definitely don't play varsity sports but are still athletic. we weren't assuming you were like super hardcore tennis star boy (which you don't have to be to fit in or even to play). haha

Alright I just didn't want people to assume I was going to be some star basketball player that everbody would know. Don't worry you don't have to recruit me ;)

I've definitely noticed that most UNC-Chapel Hill students, whether or not they actually participate in a varsity (or even club) sport, care a lot about physical fitness. You'll find plenty of people working out, going for runs, etc. This is true for most college campuses, but I think it's particularly true at Carolina.

you would fit in, but I disagree and say Chapel Hill is southern. It's not deep south, but it's definitely southern. I grew up in the midwest and it is a little bit of a culture shock. But I had friends from Cali and all over the country and everyone can find someone to hang out with. It has thousands of people, don't worry about it too much. UNC is one of the best colleges and Chapel Hill one of the best college towns. If you visit it, you'll probably love it. It's awesome, but I just thought I would clarify that it is southern (ex. guys wear shirt and ties to football games, girls wear dresses) whereas some schools its tshirts and jerseys
