Would I gain admission into Cal Poly (SLO) UCI, UCB, or UCSB

So I submitted my UC applications and a CSU application to Cal poly (SLO), UCB, UCI, and UCSB. I was wondering what the likely-hood of my gaining admittance might be and if you think I may be admitted which school is best. I plan on majoring in biochemistry or molecular biology. My weighted GPA is a 4.07 and unweighted is a 3.79. By graduation I will have completed 4 AP classes. I received a 3 on my AP US history exam and a 4 on my AP language exam. This year I am taking AP biology and AP literature. I am VP of 3 clubs (choir, drama and CSF) and spend about 2 hours a week all year on two (choir and CSF) and about 23 hours a week for about 12 weeks a year in drama. One of my admissions essays was on what being an avid choir student has taught me the other on my feeling of leadership toward my younger sister. I recieved an 1800 on my SAT (650 reading 600 math 550 writing) which I found disappointing and I received a 29 on my ACT. If I left something out let me know :)

In-state, right?

yes in state

Based on admission statistics, I think you stand a good chance at UC Poly SO, UC Irvine, and USB. I think you do stand a chance at Berkeley with your ACT score, but it’s definitely the biggest reach.

It is going to come down to your 4.07 GPA and the 29 ACT. You are a fit for UCI and possibly even their Honors Program. I would expect acceptances to UCSB and most likely Cal Poly SLO as well. UCB? Probably not a match unless your essays were off the charts. I know kids that had incredible GPA’s and test scores that did not get in – but, you never know. Remember it is a “selection” process not a “qualification” process. Cal Poly’s Science and Mathematics department for the most recent class had an average GPA of 3.85 and an ACT of 27 and an SAT1 of 1220 (according to their calculations you have a 1250). So, it looks real good. You will get in somewhere nice! Cal Poly SLO is an amazing place at thousands of dollars less a year than a UC. If you get accepted there you gotta go!

thanks for the replies! Cal Poly is quite a bit cheaper, and I do like SLO. Osakadad, you made me feel so much better about my SAT scores when comparing them to Cal Poly. Do you know what the people are like at Cal Poly? I know the atmosphere at UCSC really turned me off from applying there and I haven’t had the chance (although I hope to) to see Cal Poly. And I must look into that honors program!

I think you have a good chance of getting into Cal Poly SLO, but UCI and UCSB are reaches because of you SAT and you don’t have a chance at UCB.

Chance me back?

@Pandasaurus - I can give you a very good description of the folks at Cal Poly. My son is there now studying engineering and he loves it. So, here is a description of various categories of folks. Administrators: The new President, Dr. Armstrong, is incredibly hands on. He was there helping families move their kids in to the dorms on move in day! I actually heard him say, “Can I help you carry that?” A genuine guy who I think is the perfect leader for the school in these uncertain times. Teachers: Dedicated educators whose main priority is teaching undergraduate students. Smaller classes, no TA’s, the profs encourage you to approach them. Students: Outgoing, active, extremely helpful and generally very happy to be at Cal Poly SLO. There is lot’s of school spirit and they study hard. They also have a reputation for partying too. But, my kid says that people have fun and rarely get obnoxious. Police: They do their job well and keep the campus safe. Everyone takes the "Learn by Doing’ philosophy very seriously. Students are engaged in projects almost everywhere you look. Most campus events are run by the students. This includes everything from the prospective student Open House to the Football games and Intercollegiate Championship Rodeos they host. When on campus you can see people engaged in all sorts of activities and projects. Tons of clubs of all sorts. The campus is beautiful, the mountains are just as nice and don’t forget the ocean right there. Folks are a bit outdoorsy and seem ready for adventure.

My kid turned down offers from 5 UC’s for Cal Poly SLO. This includes UCLA, UCSD, UCSB, USCS and UCI Honors program. With regards to UCSC I totally get your concerns. You have to be of a very certain flavor to enjoy that atmosphere.

Contrary to what michael2 says, UCI and UCSB are not reaches fro you.

Just an update now that I have received all of my admissions offers: I got into all four of those schools! Even Berkeley! I will be attending Berkeley in the fall as I can’t afford Cal Poly (not enough financial aid) and I toured Berkeley a couple months ago and fell in love. So, HA Michael2 I got into UCB and I clearly stood a chance. :)

Congrats!! Enjoy your education at UCB.
