I go to a very highly respected private school. I have a 3.5 gpa, 1710 sat scores (620 math, 600 writing, 490 reading), good extracurriculars (1 sport every year, 3 clubs, 1 of which I am a founder/vice president).

in state or out of state? if in state Northern VA area or Richmond area, or more rural? Is 3.5 weighted or unweighted? Does is include non-core academic subjects (like art, music, gym)? If so, what would your GPA be without the non-core academic subjects? Are you taking the most rigorous curriculum offered at your HS? Does your school rank? If so, what is your approximate class rank? JMU only looks at M and CR SAT scores… making your total 1110.

Do you know your intended major?

I live out of state (MA), 3.5 is weighted, it includes 1 art class so my gpa is basically the same without it, I want to major in chemical engineering.

I take all accelerated, honors, and AP classes, and my school does not use a rank system.

“I want to major in chemical engineering”

From the JMU engineering website – “Rather than splitting into separate departments that address the sub-disciplines of the engineering profession, we offer a single, integrated, engineering degree that focuses on sustainability, design, and systems analysis in order to educate and train “engineering generalists” who can address the wide range of ever-changing engineering challenges of the 21st century.”

In terms of admissions to the university, your CR score is low… and your M score is about mid-range according to the data set for the class of 2014 <a href=“Institutional Research - JMU”>Institutional Research - JMU;

The average admitted student GPA for the class of 2014 was 3.84

Does your HS have recent admitted student data for kids from your HS in terms of admissions to JMU? You GC maybe able to give you a better idea of whether JMU is a Match school for you. Good Luck! :)

I would say retake your SAT and get around 100 more points on your reading section and you will have a great chance.

I was waitlisted and then accepted. I’m out of state with a 3.5 unweighted, 3.9 weighted, 1800 SAT, 1190 w.o. writing. A bunch of EC’s. We’re pretty similar and I thought I had a good chance. I was upset when I got waitlisted but worked hard to get off! Is say you have a good chance but try to get a higher sat!

JMU tends to pick plenty of kids from private schools. 3.5 GPA will do. I’d say try to get another leadership position in another one of your EC’s.

I have a 3.4 unwieghted gpa. i’m in 1 honor class and 3 AP’s . I do a lot of EC, im the vice president of a club, and treasure of another one. i do every the school play and i have 375.5 community service hours.i’m and out-of state male and hispanic .Any suggestions on how i can improve my chances of getting in JMU?

keep your grades up and continue to take a rigorous course load- and get a good score on your SAT!

Being hispanic might help.

sup3rxmariio13 do you know what your major might be?
