I got in and I LOVE the school but I am not sure how I would fit into the student body…I am not very athletic or “jocky” I am a male…im pretty “typical”…kind of preppyish…more of a coffeehouse dweller than a mountain climber…I am totally ok (and plan on participating in) party life etc…I just dont know how I would fit in!!

While I do think there are athletic types, the impression I got while on the on campus tour is that there are many types of students, many which appeared to me as “coffeehouse dweller”-esque.
The Bates student we had as a tour guide did mention that they require some sort of physical education component while attending, however when I cringed he was quick to point out the range of offerings for the less athletically inclined (yoga, pilates, ballroom dancing and I think he said something about ultimate frisbee)
I think you will fit in fine. If it’s any consolation I plan on starting this fall and I’m definitely not the sporty type, so I am sure there are others in the same boat:) Congratulations on getting in!

Definitely can see you here. Hangout at the Ronj ([The Ronj Bates College](http://home.bates.edu/codex/tour/ronj/)), party on Frye Street…life will be good.

Regarding Phys Ed, yeah, it’s really not hard to fulfill, just designed to encourage students to learn both in body and mind. You can do everything from bowling to skiing to dancing. It varies by semester but here’s what going on now, for example: Academic Programs | Bates College. Lots of classes are taught by other students (usually upperclassmen) so they’re really low-key and fun. Participation in club sports (including ultimate frisbee, sailing) can also be used as Phys Ed credit.

Being an athletic minded person is definitely NOT a prerequisite to Bates. Yeah, a lot of Batesies like the outdoors, but just as many prefer music or poetry. PE classes aren’t a big deal; they are as intense as you want them to be, I’ve taken Squash so far and it was a lot of fun. My friend has done bowling and yoga.

Hi. I similarly was wondering if i would like bates. i was wondering what the party scene is like. how much drinking really goes on. I drink in high school and am definitely going to in college, but i don’t want it to be a dominant factor in whether i have a good time.

is the social life stressfull or relaxed? thanks!
