I’m from north Alabama & I plan to go to Ole Miss. I don’t know if I want to rush or not. I’ve heard that if you don’t rush, then you’re pretty left out. Are there many people that don’t rush? I don’t particularly feel like Greek life is for me, but I also don’t want to get there and have no one to talk to or hang out with. So, would I enjoy being here even if I don’t rush?
You will love it regardless, it is pretty greek but my son hangs out with a lot of guys that didn’t pledge. It is a very welcoming campus regardless. It is small enough unlike Tuscaloosa to get involved in a lot of activities without going greek.
Guy or girl? Higher percentages of girls are Greek than guys, but the vats majority of students (like 65%) are NOT Greek. I cannot recall from our last info sheet, but I sort of recall about 40% girls and 30% guys and it came out to about 34% in social Greek chapters (plus some odds and ends in other non-social).
Regardless, there are TONS of other areas to get involved.
The Honors College at Ole Miss is awesome and is the main draw for our son. That is an immediate means to connect with folks that are passionate for academics. Similar to a social chapter, it draws all walks of life and stays solidly wrapped around why one is at college.
My wife and I were both Greeg - but our son had zero interest. Maybe its a generational thing, but he thinks the whole idea is kind of weird. Go figure.
The Greek system has a big influence. Some people don’t want the hassle of being Greek, but still kind of feel they are missing out on some of the social life. You just have to decide that on your own. You live in North Alabama and doubtless know some people who are attending Ole Miss. You are close enough to make a couple of visits. Just spend some time checking things out.
