Hey guys I'm a little confused about this one. Everyone's been telling me different things. All my life I've studied in English medium schools but for middle school and the first two years of high school I studied in an non-International (but still English medium) school in India. Right now I study in an international school in South East Asia. My english scores in the Indian exams were very good (92%) and I got 790 CR in my first SAT. So do I still need to take the TOEFL? Everyone I've asked is giving me different answers on this one. Please help. :)

No one can give you a definite answer that will hold true for all circumstances.

I have heard that Columbia requires the TOEFL for English-speaking applicants if they score below a 650 on the CR.

In that sense, your 790 CR may exempt you; it also may not.

Your best bet is to call the colleges themselves.

Thanks. Technically my first language is not English but it’s the language I’m most fluent in.

I believe that you have to take TOEFL UNLESS your first language is English. So I think you have to take it.

What’s your nationality?

I think most schools don’t require the TOEFL if the applicant scores a 660 CR or above. At least that’s the case for Hopkins and Cornell.

Normally, 5 years of education in schools where English is the medium of instruction is enough to mean that you don’t need the TOEFL. However, each college/university sets its own policy about this. You need to read through each website very thoroughly. If you can’t find the information for the places that you will be applying to, send them an email and ask.

What writing score did you get?

I got a 770 and my nationality is Indian. By the time of application I would have completed 12 years with English as a medium of instruction.

no you have good enough SAT scores to exempt you from the TOEFL

when you finish applying email the admission people and tell them you got 790 CR and 770W and ask if you can waive the TOEFL test.

Oh ok thanks. I don’t think the test is going to be hard for me but it’s just an extra hassle, you know?

I don’t think that good SAT can always exempt you from taking TOEFL. Just do as the googler said, email the admission commitee and ask then if you can be exempted from taking TOEFL.
