Would I survive at UVa?

I see people here with amazing sat-act-gpa scores and it's kind of intimidating. I'm an asian male from VA with much lower stats than the people on here who were admitted... I have a little above average of a GPA than most people here but my SAT was significantly lower. I only had a 1900 sat while I see people on here with 2100+/31+. I'm around rank 4 out of 450 kids at a pretty competitive public school, but I feel like UVa would kill me. Would people look down on me for only having a 1900 sat compared to everyone here with a 2100+? I would hate to in the 10th percentile at UVa lol.

Everyone here is so smart, and I get this feeling that everyone at UVa is going to above me.

thanks for reading. any thoughts?

If you get into the school, they think you can handle the school itself. Admissions isn’t just “Are you good enough?” Part of it also is, “Could the student succeed here?” And you were accepted, you can do it. Just stay positive man! UVA is not a cutthroat competitive environment, friends will help you when you need it. And you will help others when they need it. It’s how people learn. Community learning is something that I think UVA does a great job at promoting. I only got a 1980 on my SAT, but I am not scared whatsoever about my education at UVA. It isn’t how well you score on a stupid test, it’s how much you truly want to learn something. Please go to UVA, and don’t doubt your abilities one bit!

Yes, you’ll be fine. SAT is not an accurate barometer of your academic prowess, it’s just how good you took one test. Honestly, its baffling why they place such merit on one test. I believe that a universal college admissions test like this is needed, but it should be given sophmore and jr year of high school and encompass more subject areas.

Rank 4 out of 450 is very good; you should be fine. As wofbharatj said they wouldn’t have accepted you if they didn’t think you could handle the rigor. UVA does not have the atmosphere of an ivy

People will not look down on you for your low SAT, let alone ask you wha you got on the SAT. Congratulations on your admittance to the Hoo-nation.

Haha I made a 1900 on my SAT as well.

Honestly, I don’t think a test can determine your ability to succeed at any college! A GPA that takes more than 3 years of sweat, tears and labor is a much better indicator than an overrated exam that only takes 3 hours to complete.

Although I’m not at UVa, I HIGHLY doubt anyone will care about your score! SATs only matter for college admissions. After you’re admitted into a college, they’re useless. IDK why so much emphasis is placed on SAT scores.

As I said before, your GPA reflects your intelligence and your work ethic more than a stupid test.

You’ll do fine. I’m not stressed out and I’m in the same boat as you! You shouldn’t be stressed out either! :)

EDIT:
Just a side note…Everything you’ve done in high school will lose its significance when you enter college! Those four years you spent slaving over getting the perfect grade and making it into various Honor Societies will be thrown out the window a month from now.

You could view as a bad thing, but I think it’s good! You’re now given the opportunity to redefine yourself as you see fit! You’re basically going to start with a clean slate! How exciting it that?!

My friend got into UVA with a 1600 and he’s doing just fine in engineering. You’ll be good.

SAT or high school gpa has no correlation to success at UVa. I have come across many smart people with better “stats” than me who are drifting by here. There is a simple formula for success at any college as I have seen, do your work, and put in good effort, and 9/10 times you will be very satisfied with the results. Those who complain about how hard things are, or that they can’t keep up with the work, usually cannot tell you with a straight face that they gave it their all. That being said, you know yourself better than anyone else, so you will know your limits and how hard to push them.

I can’t imagine anywhere in the adult world, or even the college world, where somebody would actually ask you what your SAT scores were. If someone is obnoxious enough to do that, tell em 2400. That will shut them up.

Someone said on another thread that surviving college is a long, drawn-out 4 year marathon. The SAT is a 3 hour sprint on a Saturday morning. They are not as comparable as you think and your SAT is not a totally accurate predictor of how you will fare in college.

^Well put.

the sat has a higher correlation to intelligence than do grades yes grades mean you work hard but that can only go so far. So it isn’t meaningless it’s just a way for colleges to assess students other than grades which can vary greatly from school to school. Also having a 1900 isn’t bad at UVA yes you would be lower but it is still a great oppurtunity. I do agree that too much emphasis is often placed on the sat for the wrong reasons such as schools wanting to be able to show that they get students with great scores

Chewes, with all due respect – you have no idea what you’re talking about. The SAT is not an intelligence test, nor is it designed to assess intelligence. The sole purpose of the SAT is to predict a student’s success in the first year of college. And it’s a relatively poor measure of even that. Most research shows a greater correlation between good grades in high school and success in college than high SAT scores and success in college – which is precisely why U-Va, like many top colleges, looks at SATs but weighs high school grades and curriculum more strongly when reviewing applications.

Also, if you want to guess what a student’s SAT scores will be, all you need do is look at how much money the parents make. There’s a strong correlation between family income and high SATs.

Only on college-obsessed boards like College Confidential do students and their parents place such a ridiculous amount of emphasis on the SAT. A 1900 is a strong score. If the OP doesn’t do well at U-Va, it won’t be because of his SAT.

I had an SAT score below the 25th percentile and I was Phi Beta Kappa and graduated with a very high GPA. It’s all about how hard you work, not what a dumb standardized test predicts. I completely agree with Novaparent.

^wahoomb, I may very well be showing your reply to my youngest someday…thanks for posting that.

Completely agree with you Wahoomb… I live overseas but we did once live in Ct and at the prep school my kids attended, most able kids are given the SAT in 7th grade as prep. So, my sense is you can train these kids like mice to take the exam well if they are diligent and take it often enough. It does not necessarily measure innate intelligence nor ability. Those who can afford to take the prep courses do well on the whole…those who cannot??? Notwithstanding, those like me who choose not…!!

Motivation and hard work will go further than innate intellect in most cases…

I don’t rate the SAT in measuring ability…

DS had “only” a 1910 SAT and 29 ACT and was accepted to both W&M and UVA. So don’t despair.

i think SAT need to be “so-where-high enough” ( whatever that means in each college) so you won’t get filter out / screen out in the 1st round.

truly SAT is not a good way to measure how great/successful a kid is…i totally agree.
just try to do your best & that’s all you can do with these 3 hour test. it really is not one thing that make or break an acceptance/ admission.

thank you for the advice guys! I guess I was just being silly thinking that I’d be way inferior.

now i just hope people don’t look at me at uva and say i only got in cause of affirmative action since i’m a minority. people who i thought were my friends are now telling me i only got into UVA because i’m asian/minority with the help of affirmative action. kind of hurts. it’s not like i chose to be a minority

no worries…“1900 asian male” just kidding !!!

you won’t tattoo 1900 on your forehead, right? so who knows! all they’ll know is how great you will be in class/group projects/school contribution etc etc.
you’ll be OK!
my kid is an asian & there are quite a few asian who will be going to UVA, so see ya there.

VAResi,

You worry too much! Honestly who gives a crap what people think! If they think you got in because you’re a minority, whatever. You’ll have the opportunity to meet cooler friends at UVa. Besides I’m pretty sure most people at UVa don’t care about HOW you got there! They’re more concerned about WHAT you’re doing while you’re there!
