Would it be a bad idea for a SEAS freshman to take Art Hum first semester?

Would I be too underprepared relative to College sophmores who would probably comprise most of the class? Or do a lot of College/SEAS freshman take the class as well?

The rest of my schedule isn't too bad.

physics 1400 series
gen chem
calc II
gateway (1st sem)/ UW (2nd)
art hum????/comp sci 1004?

I just don't think I can deal with another math/science course first semester and I'd like to be able to exercise my writing so it doesn't rot away or something even more grotesque. I was also maybe thinking like a 3000 level art class because I know those count to fill the nontechnical elective requirement. I've been heavily involved in photography for the past three years but I bet those classes are pretty competitive to get into, as they are at most schools. And I don't exactly have seniority. Or maybe a creative writing course. Any advice/thoughts?

good luck getting into the art hum class to start w/.

Yeah I figured that would be hard too. Is it possible?

If you aren’t an athlete (preferred registration) or music major (they sign you up for it, i think), you aren’t gonna get it

Oh, and if you’re looking for a non-math/science course, look into the architecture dept. Percpetions of Arch is pretty light (2 papers, no exams) and interesting at the same time.

There is a SLIGHT chance you can register for it without being an athlete. You literally have to be the 1st group to register tho, they fill up that fast.

Also, where did you see that 3000 level art classes fulfill your non-tech? According to this they still don’t…

Elective Nontechnical Courses ">/url

I also know plenty of engineers who wish this wasn’t true so I feel I’d know about it if art classes counted for credit…

EDIT: I see you can take ONE course only for credit. This is a changed policy in the past 3 years…

yeah, you simply won’t get into a section until your sophomore year. at least not during registration.

however, that doesn’t mean that you couldn’t show up to a particular section of art hum and ask the professor to allow you to add his class after the fact. bring a sheet and say that you’re really interested and picked him out specifically because of his reviews on CULPA or something, and you really hope he can find a seat for you. don’t sound like you’re sucking up, just matter-of-factly. it’ll work in any lecture class (i.e. anything that’s not a seminar). works for Bollinger’s Freedom of Speech and Press, works for Eric Foner, works for whatever you like unless the professor is completely, unbelievably full of themselves and gets off on being able to exclude students.

on the other hand you may prefer just waiting to sophomore year, rather than gate-crashing. but gate-crashing is well within the rules.
