Would it be bad if I declined an acceptance this year and applied next?

I just finished up my freshman year and I have a 4.0 GPA with 31 hours. The 31 hours includes all 5 business indicator courses.

I've been giving some thought to staying at my current school(community college) my sophomore year and applying to McCombs next year...again.

I think that my application this year was really good, I have a great recommendation letter and I feel as if my essays were solid. Coupled with my 4.0 and a part-time job I feel as if I will get accepted into McCombs this year.

But for the last few weeks the thought of staying put has come in to mind. I have my own reasons for staying put.

Would the admissions department dislike me if I decline an acceptance letter now and went on to apply again next year?

If you’ve been accepted and your plan and goal is to attend UT, then why put it off? Who knows what the future holds… maybe something unforeseen comes up next year and you fail some classes or you miss the deadline to apply and don’t get accepted. No one knows what will happen. So if you have the chance to attend now, then go for it. Why risk some it and put it off?

Getting into McCombs is really tough. But if you think you can maintain that 4.0 next year at the community college then you can still get into McCombs again next year. But the sad thing is that no one knows what’s gonna happen in the future. If money is an issue then I can understand but you should keep in mind that a lot of students graduate with debt and your not gonna be the only one. If it’s some personal issue, then i can’t say much.

How about calling and asking for a deferral for a year.

I doubt he could defer admissions and still be able to take classes at another institution. He would most likely have to reapply.

Never hurts to ask.

Yeah I don’t believe they would ever allow somebody to just continue taking classes regardless of grades and still get in a year later.

I agree that calling to ask whether you can defer acceptance but take courses at CC is worth a try–all they can do is say “No, you have to reapply if you don’t start in the fall,” and then you’d know for sure what your options are. They might say, “Fine, as long as you don’t take more than ____ credits total to transfer into our school,” or something. Definitely worth a phone call to check it out.

In fact, I was accepted to a graduate program there and then everyone was asked whether they wanted to defer as they had more acceptances than expected. I did defer and continued taking cc course to meet some prereqs. I ended up never going to grad school, but when asked to defer they never put any kind of stipulation on it.

woah, so if they let me defer I can continue taking courses where I am at and even if I get a C I’ll still be accepted?

I don’t know. And you’ll never know if you don’t ask. I’m just saying that when I agreed to defer nothing was said about not taking cc courses. Maybe they didn’t realize I was already enrolled?
