I have a huge passion for both.
I am applying to Suny Purchase, New Paltz, and Albany.
Which is the harder industry to break into?
What classes would I be taking to obtain these majors?
Thanks so much in advance!!

I graduated with a BA in film and if i could do it over i’d major in anything but film… its probably the most worthless degree one can get. I know it sounds brash but ive been working in the film industry for a couple years now (camera work) and have never been asked about my degree. speaking honestly and from experience, i think the best approach is majoring in something solid and doing a minor in film and take as many film/comm classes as you want. that way you have something else you can do with your degree. the most valuable thing i got out of school with regard to film is the internship opportunities… led to jobs and i was working from that, nothing to do with school. you can learn anything about film on your own time and effort. another thing is make friends with other people interested in film from internships/film classes. classmates and co-workers stick together. Ive gone back to school for something with more stability (engineering) but still talk to my film friends/coworkers daily that are still very active in the industry, working in it daily.

what city are you in?

If you’re absolutely sure you want to pursue a career in film, then I would still go for a communications/ media major and, like the other person suggested, take classes in film as well. The thing about nearly all careers (and graduate schools) is that they like to see you bring something different to the table. In law school, for instance, they take extra note of students who majored in economics, political science, philosophy, even theatre…anything beyond plain ol’ pre-law. Same deal in business schools. So I figure it would be the same way in film.

what if one majors in film but supplements it with minors, specializations or other classes in other subjects?

The film industry seems like it could be different from the other ones I mentioned. So, that would definitely work. The biggest concern is the whole are-you-absolutely-sure-that’s-what-you-want-to-do? question because that is a super specific major that won’t do you much good beyond the film industry.

Thanks to everyone that answered. I really needed insight.
To be honest, I am not 100% certain that I want to major in film. I live in NYC
