Would it be better to be raise my grades or start from scratch?

Currently heading back to school after I had been dismissed from my previous university for poor academics. My big issue is that my current transcript is full of Ds, Fs, and Ws. As is, my GPA is pretty crappy, so I can’t transfer to any university until I get this all fixed up or think of something else. I can bring a few grades up pretty easily, but how I see it is that a lot of the classes on my transcript are stuff that aren’t relevant to my current career path. So I’m thinking that if I just apply to whatever university, but start from scratch then maybe something could be worked out?

You can’t start from scratch. Your grades will follow you. There is a national student database that colleges check.

That being said, many colleges are happy to assist students just like you in order to be very successful. Don’t assume all doors are closed . But Erin’s dad is correct. Your transcripts will follow you and that can’t be changed.

Best of luck to you

Hmm I don’t like that as an answer, so let me rephrase the question. What would you do if you were in a situation similar to mine?

Go to community college to raise your scores and then transfer.

See post #1. You’re not able to start from scratch – you can’t erase your old transcript. Thus, your only path is to simply show how you’ve matured and knock out great grades in your upcoming classes. Basically, you don’t have two choices, only one.

Like I said before, this isn’t uncommon and many institutions are EXTREMELY happy to see students like you succeed. Be careful to not fall into those shady schools (mostly for profit) out there that just want your loan money and don’t care about your eventual destination i.e. transfer to a 4 year bachelors-conferring college.

You first need to get to the root of WHY you are getting terrible grades.

Root wise it’s been a lot of things, but I’ve been checking them off little by little. Likewise I plan to start school at a much slower pace.

You seem to be in denial about your situation:

  1. “dismissed from my previous university for poor academics”
  2. “my current transcript is full of Ds, Fs, and Ws”

You had a second chance and burned it. I can’t see how any university worth attending (and I’m not referring to Harvard) would be willing to admit you without first seeing demonstrated and sustained satisfactory achievement in community college or after taking some time off to work or to serve in the military.

Whether you like it or not, that is the way it works.

Best of luck to you Juls. Like I said before, community college is a fantastic option for someone in your situation. Start slow if need be, pick it up when you find your groove.

You can’t erase the past but there’s no real need to be encumbered by it either. It is what it is. You simply review your options and choose what’s best for you, your finances, and your life situation.

Good luck!
