I am confused and do not know what to do. I am taking Organic Chemistry II and I was doing alright in the class till I went to Coachella for the weekend and missed my O Chem exam on Monday morning. My teacher was being a jerk and did not let me take the exam early when I requested to before the festival. So now I received a 0 on the exam and the only possible grade I can get is a mid-C to high-D.

I am a Biochem major and O Chem II is a major prerequisite. I do not know if I should just receive a C/D or if I should just drop and report the W after I receive acceptance letters. I know UC's won't transfer O Chem unless I get a B, so any advice will be helpful. Please also let me know which pathway could leave me to getting my admission rescinded.

-Major: Biochemistry Alt: Biology
-GPA: 2.94
-Major Prereqs:
-1 semester O Chem I completed, 1 semester O Chem II (in progress)
-1 Year of Calculus completed
-1 Year of Biology Completed
-IGETC Completed
-Units: 64 now, 84 after (20 in progress)

-Schools Accepted: UCR
-Schools Pending: All of the UC's except UCR

I would just tell them now… If it effects your admissions decision it is going to suck WAY more (in my opinion) to get accepted somewhere and then have it rescinded

withdraw

i got accepted to ucsc and ucsb without ochem but I did however have a strong gpa.

BTW it is was your fault for missing the exam, not the teacher.

I know it is my fault for missing the exam, but I actually tried to take it the day it was given. I was driving back, but was dosing on the road, so I had to pull over for a lil while to rest, by the time I woke up in my car it was too late for me to get there on time.

but anyways, you said you have a stronger gpa, so that is probably why they didn’t care.

I heard that a W is treated like almost as an F, and that if I withdrew the class and got an A next semester from it, it would be averaged out from admissions and looked as a C (although they wouldn’t be able to avg it out, so it will just look like an F I am assuming).

So I don’t know if it would be smart to do that, anybody else have input?

well I have just been informed by my ******* teacher that I have been dropped with a W because I missed the last test. I could have gotten a 79% still in the class and he still dropped me…

After talking to him he has told me that this is better than getting a D or F because it would of lowered my GPA and than UC’s could reject me for having a worsened GPA. But he said he doesn’t believe they can or will reject me for not completing a upper-division course because transfers are only obligated to take lower-division courses. Therefore, I believe I am going to wait till I receive all acceptances and than I will report the W. If they decide to rescind my admission I will ask them why, because transfers are not obligated to take upper division courses, and if they say that it is because of O chem II was dropped, I will challenge it via appeal.

you’ll be fine, just give a valid reason… not the coachella story. I had to “W” out of my first class ever when I got accepted to all the uc’s last year, when to Cal, Cal did not rescind me.

*went to Cal.

I reported the “W” after I was accepted to my respective admissions officer and explained how the class had interfered with my work schedule as it was a night class and I had to drop it or I wouldn’t be able to afford to attend school. As long as it is not part of your IGETC (ie. you are still getting your igetc) and you still have 60 units, you are FINE. don’t trip out about it. If either of those things apply to you however sign up for summer school pronto, and hope they are merciful :P

sorry about all the typos… I just woke up and can’t be bothered by spelling or grammar. lol

Organic Chemistry is a very important prerequisite for your major and if it is being offered at a CCC the UCs will not consider it an upper division course since only UCs and CSUs can offer upper division courses. It is certainly possible that the UCs could rescind you for not finishing a course that is a major prerequisite for you. Sanitydc gave his opinion that you will be fine if you dropped it for a valid reason and not to use the Coachella story. The problem is that you do not have a valid reason for dropping the course and if you make up some other story as to why you dropped the course you could find yourself in real trouble. It sounds like your Organic Chemistry professor knows the real reason why you missed the exam and he dropped you from the class because of it. If the UCs have any suspicions it would not be very difficult for them to contact your CCC professor and find out the true story from him and if the UCs catch you in a lie, you probably would not get a chance to apply again next year.

I really do not understand what you were thinking when you went to some sort of festival for the entire weekend rather than spend the weekend preparing for the midterm exam. Even had you made it back just in time for the test it sounds like you were in no condition to take it with any hope of passing it. The only thing that a serious student would be thinking about the two days before a midterm is studying for the test. Going to something as frivolous as a festival from Friday afternoon to Monday morning when you had a midterm exam on Monday, where you apparently did no studying nor much sleeping, is incredibly irresponsible.

In general, a W does not look like an F. I had about 10 Ws (in my former major, my current major has no Ws), and it doesn’t seem to be affecting my admissions too much.

If you must Withdraw, find somewhere to complete O-Chem in summer school if it’s one of your conditions of acceptance (which you can view once you’re admitted). Summer school can still be counted towards your transfer requirements. If your CC does not offer summer school O-Chem, I’d start looking for another CC or a UC that does ASAP.

REPORT IT NOW. You have no more or no less to lose now than you would after being accepted.

To OP: Coachella is awesome, I was there as well. However, had I an orgo exam, I would have spent Saturday studying/resting from Tallest Man on Earth until Empire of the Sun/Arcade Fire - and then I would have left early on Sunday. Kanye was good, but not worth missing an orgo exam over. At this point, I’m not sure what you can do. Your GPA is below a 3.0 and now you’re missing a pre-req. Tell them that you will make it up over the summer and take the W - see what happens. Don’t mention Coachella.

Or beg your professor to let you take a make-up exam. Cry. A lot. Sob. Crying usually works for me. Or, if not full on crying, just tearing up a lot while looking away. Tell him how important chemistry is to you, and how this is what you want to do for the rest of your life, etc… Whatever. If that fails to work, then yeah - take the W and notify them immediately.
