Would it be better to take AP Environmental Science as a junior or senior or self study the exam?

Hello everyone. How are you all today? Hope you are well.

I am a freshman who is self-studying AP Environmental Science. I read lots of sources claiming it is not a good idea to self study AP Environmental Science or any AP as it does not make much of a difference in my future. I want to self-study the course or take it in the future because it is recommended for the majors I want to go to, film and political science. I really wanted to self study the course because I wanted to take two years of AP Physics 1 and AP Physics 2 or take AP Physics 1 and AP Chemistry, but now I wonder if this was bad logic. Should I replace one of my junior or senior year classes with AP Environmental Science instead of self-studying it or will this hurt me?

Sorry if this is a rude or bad question. I was just completely unaware.

Thank you for answering and have a good day!

A general rule of thumb is that if an AP class is offered at your school that you plan to get credit for, take it at the school.

It does not look impressive if you self study an AP that is offered at your school. Take it at your school unless it is not offered there.

I agree with @equationlover …colleges want you to take classes at school…in HS and in college!

Where did you get the info that AP Env Sci is recommended for Film or PoliSci?

Is it that you need to take 4 years of science and since those are not science related fields that Env Sci is acceptable, or is it that it is particularly needed?

AP Phys and Chem woudl be acceptable for any major!

@equationlover Thank you for your response.

@bopper Thank you for your response as well. I got the info AP Env Sci helps my major from College Board and from news. If you think about it, politicians need to be able to address climate change. However, to be honest, I can’t really think of why film majors may need it at the moment. AP Environmental Science is accepted as a science credit at my school, and the only reason I was hesitant of taking the class in school was because of me wanting to take 2 years of Physics or one year of physics and one year of chemistry and because I read lots of sources claiming that colleges don’t like seeing you taking AP Environmental Science because they may see it me taking it just so that I have another AP on the list. Sorry if this makes me sound like a rude person, I hope I don’t come off like that. Also, please correct me if I am wrong, I would like to learn the truth.

Again, sorry to anyone if I come off rude. Thank you for your help.

Have a good day!

Take what you are interested in or a class that might be vital to your major in AP.

If you’re worried about scheduling issues, try taking one of those classes at your local CC or online. That’s what I’ve had to do and honestly, as long as your getting what you want out of high school, you should be fine.

But like I said, DO NOT take or not take a class based off if the colleges will see it as “good”.

Best of luck!

@equationlover Thanks! I will defiantly take your advice and most likely take this class as a junior or senior. Thank you for the luck wishes, best of luck to you as well.

Have a good day!

AP Physics and Chem are more important than APES, which is generally seen as an easier AP. Colleges want to see one year each of Bio, Physics, and Chem (doesn’t all have to be AP) so do that and don’t worry about APES.

@snowfairy137 Thanks for your answer! I would like to say though that right now, i am in Biology Honors. Next year, I will be in Chemistry Honors. If I take a physics course in junior or senior year, would it be fine for me to take AP Environmental Science?

Have a good day!

@anthonytheboy it would be fine as long as the rest of your schedule was rigourous.

Thanks! I will keep that in mind. @snowfairy137

Have a good day!

S18 is taking APES this year, but he’s also taking AP chem and AP physics 1 at the same time. He likes APES but for him it’s almost a blow-off class; definitely not the same level of difficulty as chem or physics. He’s taking APES because he genuinely likes the subject and teacher, and has no illusions that it will help him more in college than his other AP courses.

@traveler98 I’m so sorry to ask, but what is S18?

Have a good day!

Ha, sorry, it means “son 2018”, my son who is graduating in 2018.

@traveler98 Oh, thank you!

Have a good day!
