Would it be helpful to have a mentor/peer for college applications?

I'm looking to help someone who may or may not have the same resources as me or someone else in the college process that is currently applying for college admission (for fall of 2013).

I wish I had a mentor to help me (just read over the essays, help me narrow my list, help me look into schools) when I was applying, and I just wanted to know if there are other students who would a similar relationship with someone who DID finish the process successfully. When I was looking for mentors, I found many to be expensive, and not even that successful.

This is kind of an advertisement, more of a personal inquiry. I'd like to get a general consensus of the community, but if you're interested, feel free to PM me.

I’d encourage students interested in a mentor to talk to their guidance counselor. Here in Tennessee we have a program called tnAchieves that hooks you up with a mentor and gives you up to $3000 to pay for tuition at a CC. Even in states/localities that don’t have something like that, the counselor should be able to put you in touch with community members or alumni who would be willing to help.
