To post my Christmas/birthday wish list on facebook? My birthday is less than a month away, and Christmas is getting close. I'm leaving for college next year. I'm getting short on nicer clothes and will be needing things for my dorm. Would it be ok in my notes section to post what I want/need or is that a bit selfish? I can't decide.

Yes. It is always considered rude to presume that you will receive gifts, unless you have established a gift-exchange tradition with someone already or invite them to a party, which clearly you’re not doing for all your Facebook friends. Even if you just tag/make it visible to certain people, by putting it on Facebook, you’re implying a lot.

Why don’t you try asking a few friends if they want to exchange gifts and say something like, “Oooh, I really want to get you something but don’t know what. You’re lucky that I’m so easy to buy for, you know exactly what I need/want,” which leads them to ask and you can then give a shortened version of your list.

My plan would be not to tag people, but I have tons of family who consistently ask me what I want, and this year I’m just trying to avoid the “uh… I can’t remember” moment. So, even without tags, not appropriate?

Yeah, I think no tags makes it worse since you’re implying that you want anybody (read: everybody) to give.

I mean, I doubt anyone will shun you for it, but I still think it’s a not very good idea.

If you have family who ask you what you want why don’t you just email them privately when they ask? Or just create a list in a private place for yourself so you remember?

Ah, ok. I figured it would probably be bad, but worth a shot.

I’m very much a “let’s make a list and get things done and over with” kind of person.

ya, when I can’t remember things i make facebooks notes too.
