Would it be more sensible...

Would it be more sensible to transfer after your freshman year, or sophomore year in college? Which would colleges prefer?

Thanks!!!

after your sophmore, colleges prefer you to transfer in as a junior

If you are applying to a school that would have been impossible to get into your first year of college one year of courses (half a year at application time) is not going to help you at all. You simply cannot show improvement in that time span. In this case the best option is just to wait to transfer for junior year.

If you are at a cc or such and transfering to your state university system it is also best to wait until junior year. In most cases there is some sort of formal plan to follow to is designed for the junior year transfer. Thus, juniors get prefrence and have an easier time credit wise.

Barring this two situactions I would say it is best to be a sophomore transfer. Outside of the cc route I have seen no evidence that colleges prefer the older transfers. Clearly this is the best route for the student, If you dont like your current college you should leave as quickly as you can. Also, it seems that being only a year off one could work to fit in and create a sense of belonging. Half of your schooling somewhere else seems far too long, you are as much a product of that prior school as the one you transferred into.

UPenn says they would rather have you transfer after your sophomore year. Transferring then also makes the transition easier...at least socially. But to guage one's academic potential at their institution, I would imagine junior transfers to be easier to determine
