Would it be overconfident to consider UCSC a safety school?

I'm a community college student, and I'll be applying to transfer out in the fall. I've visited UCSC and I love it, but I'm also going to try to apply to UCLA and UCI. If I don't get into those, do I have a good enough chance of getting into UCSC? I didn't do so well in high school, but I currently have a 3.65 GPA at my college, and I expect to raise it by the time I apply.

The best way to consider it or any other UC besides UCLA and UCB a safety school would be if you applied for TAG. And while I don’t approve of multiple TAGs, if you want UCI, then TAG there as well. If you’re a CCC student, of course, and not an OOS CC.

I looked into the TAG system, and I’m not eligible seeing as I’ve taken transferable math and English classes my first year, at least for UCI. Initially, I enrolled Statistics my first semester without knowing this and now I realized that it was good of me to do so, since math and English writing classes are incredibly hard to get into (especially statistics), and waiting until my second year would have been risky.

Where on earth did you hear you had to complete your math and English requirements the year before transfer? Often it’s a stipulation that you have finished these before you apply for TAG (so during the first year of two years). It is definitely encouraged to finish them as soon as possible, that’s for sure.

This would be for Fall 2010 applicants:

[Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG)](http://www.admissions.uci.edu/admissions/tag.html)

WHO IS NOT ELIGIBLE FOR TAG?

A California community college applicant who:
has first UC transferable English composition course in fall 2010;
has first UC transferable math course in fall 2010;
has a degree from a four-year college/university;
has any coursework from a four-year college/university (exception: coursework completed at a UC in good standing);
has any coursework from an out-of-state college/university;
has any foreign/international coursework;
has below a 3.0 GPA in UC transferable coursework by the end of summer 2010.

Unless I’m being daft and missing something, I’m not eligible for TAG.

And I realize that information is for UCI, which is why I said “at least for UCI”, and I’ve check UCSC’s TAG page, and there doesn’t seem to be anything that would make me ineligible, so thanks for your help!

You’re reading it incorrectly. It’s saying that for Fall 2011 applicants you must have completed your English and math courses before Fall 2010. That list is for those who are not eligible for TAG. If one completed their English or math course in Fall 2010 or later for Fall 2011 transfer, then they would not be eligible.

EDIT:

Here’s the list of who is eligible that better explains it. Perhaps it would better for you to look at this rather than the “who is not eligible” list :). It makes more sense.

Seriously, why would they punish someone for taking their English and math courses early? This is what they want you to do: take them as soon as possible.

Ohhhh, I see now. I totally didn’t see that. Thanks for clearing things up! :D

You’re welcome :)
