From what I've seen and heard, I'm under the impression that most students who submit art portfolios submit nice paintings and photorealistic drawings.

Would it be strange or inappropriate to send a collection of simplistic drawings, design and comics as a portfolio? People tend to write off cartoons as petty non-art, but I'm hoping that colleges like Wesleyan would at least find it refreshing.

Are you a cartoonist?

I guess I am, by definition. I make comics for my school’s newspaper.

I would do it, but, be aware that they will be judged by the art department and strictly as a work of art, not necessarily for their editorial content. You should also be aware that the deadline for submitting visual art work was/is January 1st (you didn’t mention what year you are in.) Wes has some fairly specific rules about submitting and you should probably familiarize yourself with them: [Visual Arts, Admission - Wesleyan University](http://www.wesleyan.edu/admission/applying/supplemental/visual_arts.html)

I’m applying as a transfer student, so no worries–the deadline isn’t until March.
