Would it help if an Asian male did not identify ethnicity?

@ucbalumnus - Thanks for the WSJ article. That was hilarious. I guess my parents were utter failures, then. They didn’t even try :)

@lakeawead - I’m glad you feel proud. Good for you! I myself always felt a bit unease with the word “proud” because it seems to imply superiority and accomplishment. I’m not particularly proud of any unearned affiliation. They are not my achievements and I can’t take credit for them. Instead, I ENJOY who I am, I’m grateful for my upbringing, and I look forward to more enrichments.

Good thing that your parents did not mold you into a stereotype, but you apparently have a strong academic record anyway.

Be aware, though, that engineering divisions at selective schools (particularly state flagships) may be more selective that the arts and sciences divisions at the same schools. Make sure that you have some ironclad safeties in your application list (unless you want to use community college or a very low selectivity four year school with a very late application deadline as your safety).

Also note that most state schools do not give much need-based financial aid to out of state students, though some are relatively inexpensive (e.g. Minnesota, NCSU, Stony Brook, Cal Poly SLO) and others offer big merit scholarships to high stats students (e.g. University of Alabama campuses in Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, and Huntsville).

In addition, some of the generally highest prestige schools are not considered the top schools for engineering.

@ucbalumnus - Thanks again! I do have UMN and NCSU in my sight, but I’m gunning for those super competitive scholarships at top schools. I won’t be getting any need-based aids anyway. Parents worked too hard and saved too much – another Asian thing? :)

Follow-ups should go to the FAQ and Discussion thread:

Good luck in your applications.
